Season 3 Epson 1

Been rewatching the show from the beginning. Been so used to the first two now I'm noticing the differences going to season three.
Seems like a lot of close ups so far. I miss the old decore and wish they kept the furniture.

Anyone else for visual comparisons and camera styles?

reply

Never thought about the extra close-ups, but I believe that's pretty much limited to those first two or three Tabitha
eps. I agree the décor in the first two years is classier (and in black-and-white, thank you), but I LOVE the Gabriel angel on the weathervane. So much so, I had a replica (exactly down to every detail) made by a wonderful artist in
Australia. It hangs in my kitchen.

reply

Ah, I remember you going through that process now. Not sure what I would want from that show to remind me of it. Maybe the gazebo. Lol

reply

To me, the angel is very unique - the guy who replicated it for me spent more than a year doing so. It's exact in
size, color (olive green) and detail.

Nobody seems as interested in it as me...most fans discuss the blue china or the red candy dish (which
stood on the kitchen/bar divider).

So far on disc one the show's been great. No repetition of plots. Feels like season 2 only in color.

I noticed in the halloween episode the window bench in the dining area was suddenly replaced by a straightforward window. Saw the reason as the councilman needed to climb through it later on.

Btw I just realized the auto correct messed with my title. Found a way to turn it off. Nice to have what I type actually show up.

reply

Oh my goodness! You're a mind reader! I've been watching season three (with an eagle eye to look for goofs) I noticed the window seat was gone in the Halloween episode. It was just there the week before. Ha! And it was clearly built in, not something you could move.

I noticed it because I love window seats. I had one in an apartment I used to live in. I just think they are so quaint and charming. But in the third season Halloween episode, it's gone!

Another thing about the Halloween episode, it contradicts the first two seasons. In the seasons one and two Halloween episodes the witches are upset with the mortal view of them as ugly and covered in warts. In the first season episode Samantha says that her mother always leaves the country until the celebration is over. It upsets her too much.

In season two Endora who has disguised herself as a little girl trick or treater, turns Darrin into a werewolf.

Now in season three we learn that Endora hosts an annual Halloween party! Well, which is it? I suppose the writers could only go so far with the "witches hate Halloween" theme and decided on something different even though it contradicted what was established. Uncle Arthur even goes so far as to describe the menu to Darrin from last year's Halloween party. LAST year Endora was angry about Halloween and turned Darrin into a werewolf.

I love this show! But this was rather sloppy writing as far as continuity was concerned! However I think that maybe with color episodes, a Halloween party hosted by Endora would be fun in a visual sense. The writers just went in a different direction and ignored what had already been established.

reply

Yes it was sloppy in continuity but loved the party. So much to look for. A non actor trying his best to do his scene with the others around him being supportive.
The background people being recycled. Endora thinking people wanted to hear her poem but Arthur telling the truth and being a total brat.
The whole pussycat thing. Arthur being alternately funny and nauseating/boring with his food description of another party.
"Play Melancholy Baby" lol. Etc.

Fun episode.

reply

Yeah, agree about the sloppy continuity. But it was a good change of pace episode. Endora was even nice to Darrin. She was too busy being annoyed with her brother Arthur.

Uncle Arthur was hilarious as usual.

Something I never thought about before, it was Halloween, so where were the trick or treaters? In the other Halloween episodes there were lots of kids in the neighborhood. Very convenient that no children rang the Stephens' doorbell while they were holding an "out of this world" party!

And Gladys Kravitz staring at the Stephens house, again!! It WAS Halloween. Would it be SO unusual for people in strange costumes to show up at their house? Geez! Sometimes that woman really needed a hobby! LOL Maybe watch TV instead of watching your neighbor's house all the time.

reply

I rationalized that the party was a reaction to the negativity that Endora felt towards Halloween....turning it around and making a positive out of a negative situation.

reply

Also, not every Halloween party is held ON Halloween. Therefore, the lack of trick or treaters;
therefore Gladys's suspicions.

And the "recycling" of extras. LOL! The gray-haired old man is Abner's DOCTOR the week
before! Here, he's some sort of guest warlock.

reply

I wonder if Agnes Moorehead's real life Christmas parties inspired them to make Endora having a Halloween party. Mikwalen, I do like your idea of the party being a "taking back" of a negative situation. Uncle Arthur mentions that last year Hagatha threw the party, so maybe it also rotates amongst the family members?

reply

Thanks Phoebe!
