Does Margaret love Frank?

She keeps dismissing him and dismissing him. She sleeps with him and then refuses to love him, even though she accepts his generosity (fur coat etc). Is she trying to punish him?

reply

I thought that she wanted him and didn't want him. She also reminded me of the reaper in the Seventh Seal. I suspect that her symbolic role is what makes her seem paradoxical. We get an idea of what's going on in Frank's head but far less of what's going on in hers. That said, you can read it in her face.

She was terrified to let herself love again because Eric's death nearly destroyed her. In the end she couldn't stand to have feelings so she told him to leave.

Margaret was going through the grieving process and could not afford to get close to anyone again. Frank needed to recognise this and take it slowly, however, he couldn't.

Frank loved her but I don’t think she ever loved him. She was simultaneously attracted and repulsed by him. If Frank had been more patient and less of a brute, she may have come to love him given enough time for her to finish grieving for her husband.
