Why do people find this movie scary?

I like the movie, but it was rather uneventful. I liked the character interactions and the cinematography. I loved the different camera angles and closeup shots. However, I did not feel any sense of claustrophobia.

Probably because we don't find movies like Annabelle or IT scary.

Because the malevolence of that house is left unopposed and undefeated by the end. This isn't a horror movie where the ghosts are some video game boss to be easily defeated. Eleanor is ultimately consumed by her own demons and her desire to "belong" somewhere. To me, the scariest ghost stories feature that sense of despair and dread-- The Shining, The Innocents, and the 1968 Japanese film Kuroneko all have that quality as well.
