During the Fourth of July celebration, Ramsey asks Hilts how they are getting along over there “without the rest of us.” What does he mean?

I can only think that Ramsay meant that 'most ' of the men were outside distracting the Germans in order for fewer men to secretly dig?

Always loved that line.
He says it during their Fourth of July celebration
He was inferring to them leaving the mother land England and getting on in America

There was a hint of jealousy in that line. I think the Brit captain admired the Americans for their independence
