R.I.P Harper Lee

Author Harper Lee has died aged 89. Her novel To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my favourite novels and I love this film adaptation too.

R.I.P Harper and all sympathies to her family and friends. Thank you for writing such a wonderful book, which made such a wonderful film possible too.

Go to bed Frank or this is going to get ugly .

While I haven't read the novel, the movie is one of my absolute favorites so yeah R.I.P. Harper Lee.

reply

Some of the most heartwarming and inspirational moments that I carry with me come from Lee's novel and the subsequent film. Generations of people across all cultures owe this life-changing experience to her.

Rest in peace.

I saw the articles on her death just a few hours ago.....to think, I believe she wanted to write or was in the process of writing another book after decades long hiatus.

reply

I thought that she got the sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird published....

Was she still writing something else?

Another legend has passed from us.

Allegedly a 3rd manuscript was discovered, the announcement roughly coinciding with the publication of Go Set A Watchman back in July. However, in early September an apparently “approved” expert who had examined the materials determined that they were essentially part of an early draft of To Kill A Mockingbird.

At Paragraph 3, there’s a link to a report by the expert detailing exactly what he found in the Safe Deposit box - with photographs.

Thanks for the info!

No problem. I'd actually lost track of that part of the story so it was interesting to see what came of it.

Some reasons why the late Ms. Lee never wrote another book:

She didn’t have to - To Kill a Mockingbird is such a great novel that it was unlikely that she would have ever met it, much less exceeded it, in her lifetime. Write another one if your first one was sublime?

She didn’t have to #2 - At the time of her death, Lee was earning roughly $9,000 USD per DAY on the royalties and associated fees from her novel. That’s more money in a day than many writers earn in a year from their work; it’s more in a day than some will earn in a lifetime. There was no compelling financial reason for her to write another novel.

She doesn’t seem to have handled fame very well - Being thrust into the spotlight as rapidly as she was and not being prepared for it seems to have overwhelmed Lee. Since she was dealing with her sexuality (See also #4) and since she was already a shy person, the prominence that Mockingbird brought her seems to have become unwelcome very quickly.

She was almost certainly a lesbian or a closeted bisexual woman - Had she been from a major city, or perhaps more of a “free spirit”, things would have been easier for her to accept. However being from the South and from a very religious family, had Lee’s fame and the attention around her increased with a another novel, she would have been outed and that seems to have been more than she could deal with at the time when she could have potentially written one.

The claims (which he did very little to deny) that her erstwhile “friend” Truman Capote wrote Mockingbird probably had to be very painful; - While it’s clear that Harper Lee’s efforts to assist writer Trump Capote should have allowed her to receive a co-author credit on his novel In Cold Blood, she never claimed that she wrote that novel.

I saw and enjoyed the Movie. and eventually found a copy of the book on a second hand book shop for 50 cents. Best 50 cents I ever spent.

Thank you Harper Lee.

I agree 100% with everything you said!

Thanks for saying it.

I came to this board to say the very same thing, myself.

Harper Lee, rest in peace. And thank you so much for your masterpiece!

It has had a strong and meaningful impact on my life and, I am sure, on the lives of many others.

Thank you.

Rest in peace.
