Can anybody suggest a way to see this film?

On the recommendation of an Italian friend, I've been trying to track down a copy of this movie for years. His copy of the film was in Italian with no subtitles. Can anybody suggest a way to see the film? Somebody wrote that they saw it on TV...I wonder what channel it played on...

Thanks!

Try a university (one that has a film department) library - this is the only place I have ever been able to find this film and it is really great. I am eternally looking for my own copy.

I own a VHS copy of this movie; it's quite easily available in italy: unfortunately the soundtrack is italian, no subtitles; furthermore it's a PAL system vhs; you should find a NTSC or SECAM player, able for PAL as well; i actually don't know about DVD; again, Italy is Region 2 (USA 1); the movie really deserves to be seen, even if you don't understand italian language, but Gassmann's words about view of life cannot be fully appreciated without proper dubbing (or subtitles).
If you want my cassette i can send you that (free, of course).

I've been looking for a copy of "Il Sorpasso" for ages, being a big fan of the film. I even had friends searching in the US, UK, France, Spain and Italy, to no avail.
Well, to my joy "Il Sorpasso" has JUST BEEN RELEASED in DVD by Brazilian label Versátil, specialized in European classics. The quality is ok not great (but it has been remastered), there are interviews wtih Dino Risi (enlightning) and Vittorio Gassman (shortly before his death), but subtitles only in Portuguese. You can purchase a copy on-line through www.submarino.com.br

PS: The Brazilian title is "AQUELE QUE SABE VIVER"

I have a French edition of the dvd (currently available paired with I Mostri). Not much help if you only have English but very useful if you have French because you can listen either in Italian or French. As the film was an Italian-French co-production, neither version is ideal. If you listen in Italian, you have Gassman in all his glory but lose the wonderful voice of French co-star Trintignant. It is certainly best in Italian but I occasionally use the French version if I review scenes that principally involve Trintignant. Alas, though, no English subtitles available - only French.

The university library is an excellent suggestion. I saw the movie on TV back in the mid 1980s, in a foreign country, when I was a college student. I fell in love with it. Awesome, great movie, in every respect.

I just bought a brand new Greek DVD on eBay for $5, S&H was probably another $5 (I bought four movies from the same guy, and paid under $35 for everything). This movie is in Italian, with Greek subtitles (which you can turn off). I'm fluent in Spanish, but not Italian... my plan is to get a hold of the script (both the original Italian, plus another language I can fully understand), and then watch it with script on hand.

One other catch, the DVD I bought is Region Europe only, so it won't play on my DVD player. The seller assured me that the DVD will play on any PC, so, I'll hook up my projector to my computer and watch it really big. I haven't seen it yet, so I can't comment on the picture quality.

The Portuguese-subtitled version from Brazil should work as well, as I can read Portuguese (even if I need to pause the playback a few times).
