Know any similar Samurai movies?

I just finished watching Seppuku and I am amazed at what a wonderful piece of cinema this film is. I love how realistic it seemed, how the actions of the characters were likely some taken by samurai at the time. And also the last fight scene being so one sided, was still immensely entertaining.

I've not gotten into samuri movies much. I'm well aquained with most cinema, it's just a genre I've not watched very often. I have seen a couple including the Lone Wolf and Cub series, Yojimbo and Seven Samurai.

I was wondering if anyone can suggest some great Samurai films for me to see, perhaps similar to Seppuku. I'm really looking to see some of the best.

The most similar, because of it's anti-bushido message, would be Rebellion/Samurai Rebellion, also shot by Kobayashi.
I also love Goyokin by Hideo Gosha, Hidden Fotress and Throne of Blood both by Kurosawa.

I've yet to see them, but Mitzugishi's Ugetsu, Sansho The Bailiff and The 47 Ronin are all supposed to be amazing. Kobayashi's Samurai Rebellion is also incredible - it's a lot like Seppuku, but perhaps more mythic, if a bit slower paced than i would've liked. In any case, it's mandatory, punishing viewing that's a very close 2nd to Seppuku. Some people like it even more.

Personally, i think Kurosawa is overrated, and most of his films can't stand next to Seppuku. You've already seen one of the greatest; if you're tastes are similar to mine, don't expect many other Samurai films to equal it, or even come close! =D

I haven't seen Sword Of Doom in years, but i remember liking it.

Twilight Samurai has similarities to Seppuku. Very well done.

Death of a Tea Master - not a samurai movie but similar approach.
16th century japan setting with mifune as the legendary tea master rikyu. It's really good but has no sword fights.

Also, while Kurosawa might be overhyped I wouldn't miss out on his movies.
It's great stuff non the less. Ran, Kagemusha, Sanjuro, Cobweb Forest etc

Genroku Chûshingura aka 47 ronin seems interessting. I think I had it borrowed once but did not get to sit through it. Actually I thought it was seppuko back then. Don't know how I got that mixed up.

Definitely see Samurai Rebellion and A Bloody Spear on Mt. Fuji if you can find it.

like others have said, Samurai Rebellion, Sword Of Doom, Ran and Sanjuro are all really amazing
Kill! was also a really entertaining film
Samurai Assassin, Hidden Fortress, and the Samurai trilogy are all amazing as well
and ones that arent quite samurai films but close enough are the Lady Snowblood movies, they're both really great

My favorites are: Sword of Doom, Kill!, Seven Samurai, Samurai Rebellion, Ran, Yojimbo.

Still need to see Suppuku, Sanjuro and Throne of Blood.

Another cool one to check out is Kwaidan, while its not a samurai film, its a great film, and its from the same director as Seppuku.

Hitokiri, by Hideo Gosha (far superior than the overrated Goyokin, IMHO). Shintarô Katsu and Tatsuya Nakadai!

not sure if it has been mentioned yet but Twillight Samurai is wonderful!!! Most of the great smaurai films came out of the 50's and 60's so anything by Kurosawa especially is worth while but check out twillight as it's a hidden gem!
