Any old movies like this one?
Just curious if there are any old movies dating from the 30's-60 like Carnival of Souls that deserve the same recognition. Does anybody have any suggestions?

I just remembered another one that hasn't been brought up:
Night of the Hunter! CLASSIC!!!
"But, hey, that's me, I could be wrong."
Oh, hell yeah! Night of the Hunter is awesome!
shareAny movie that can be both scary AND a Christmas movie AND watchable with your grandparents AND great is a very impressive feat! Long live Reverend Powell!
"But, hey, that's me, I could be wrong."
early luci fulci horrors from 60s or uk stuff from hammer studios, or an early robert powell called asphyx

Try SOLE SURVIVOR from the early 80's. Very similar to CARNIVAL OF SOULS in atmosphere and creepiness. It takes place during the holiday season without being about the season. It's just been released on DVD and it's beautiful!

I remember reading about Night Tide on my old account from your post, and now that I've finally seen it it has become one of my favorite films, so thank you!
shareLet's scare Jessica to death
shareAlso, "The Innocents" , and "Night of the Eagle"
shareSecond The Innocents, and on a similar tip, more genteel though still creepy as:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063381/
(For the clickshy that's MR James's 'Whistle & I'll Come to You' with the great
Michael Hordern, and a nice helping of bottomless dread.)
The Innocents is really creepy, I haven't seen Carnival of Souls (but i'm going to today!), but both films sound similar in the fact that both are ghost stories made with little to no effects!
shareI don't know if anyone has mentioned this one yet but check out House on Haunted Hill if ya get the chance! Make sure you rent the 1959 original. Skip the remake...it's pretty much crap in my opinion.
The thing is Bob, I'm not lazy! I just don't care!
MAD LOVE 1935.
sharesince nobody mentioned it, night of the demon is quite good.. as is black sunday, haxan, and the japanese films kwaidan, and onibaba. to second some already mentioned masterpieces.. the innocents, THE HAUNTING, freaks, kill baby, kill, vampyr, night gallery.. all really great older horror films. i think probably the scariest two in my mind are the haunting, and bava's kill baby, kill.

Dead Of Night (1945)
British anthology horror movie. A group of people gathered in an old house and each tells the story of something strange that happened to them.
It's been years since I've seen this so I don't rememberr a lot of details.
I don't know if it's currently available on DVD but I shouldn't be too hard to find a used copy (or VHS).

Burnt Offerings Its from the '70s, but has similar chilling qualities.
The Haunting of Julia is another atmospheric chiller from yesteryear.
"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."
I saw "Carnival of Souls" for first time tonight. Had heard of it before but never had chance to see it.
It first off reminded me of a basic creepy feeling like "Night of The Living Dead" (original version).
The other movie that came to mind while watching it was William Castle's "The Night Walker" (1964).
Starring Barbara Stanwyck. Screenplay by Robert Bloch (best known as author who wrote the novel "Psycho").
"The Night Walker" has the same type of overall creepy feeling about it.
