The Virginian's real name
Hello,
Can someone tell me what's the Virginian's real name?
"SG"
Am just now watching the episode "A Bad Place to Die". In his efforts to get information which will exonerate Trampas from a murder conviction, The Virginian applies to hire on at the local ranch. The ranch foreman agrees to hire The Virginian and asks his name as he does. The Virginian replys, in the most straight-forward manner, "Ed Morgan". He repeats this at least once later in the episode. When Kiley (the foreman) says to him, "...Morgan, or whatever your name is.", The Virginian does nothing to correct or to disagree with him.
I'm not a big watcher of the show, so I don't know if he simply borrowed some other character's name, or if "Ed Morgan" was some inside joke regarding some aspect of the cast or crew. But if neither of those is the case, then why not accept this as his given name?
I'll have to look for that one. I just watched the episode where he was going to marry the schoolteacher. I knew it wouldn't work out, since they'd have to skip the ceremony- I'm not sure how they'd handle this dialog:
Do you, {foreman} take {schoolteacher} to be your lawfully wedded wife?
I also knew it was a "whirlwind" romance- she didn't even know him long enough to know his name. :)
Raylan Givens: I told him he's got 24 hours to get out of town or I'm gonna kill him.
Except in at least one instance, he was called "Virginian" (by Judge Garth, in The Executioners). Ed Morgan was a name he used to get hired, but it wasn't his.
The point of the lack of name, was to give the character a touch of mystery, and perhaps a sense that maybe he had a "bad" past (and may have been wanted for something).
I'm sure it was just a name he was using for that situation. He was "undercover".
shareRelated, when he was in Virginia where everyone was a Virginian, what did people call him?
Raylan Givens: I told him he's got 24 hours to get out of town or I'm gonna kill him.
In the episode "The Stranger" it is very interesting that The Virginian befriends this guy who calls himself "Garrison" and The Virginian asks him his name and he just says "Garrison" and it seems to throw The Virginian off a little. It's like he finds it strange that someone would use only one name, instead of two of them. I would have thought it funny if he had said, "You find my name funny?? Garrison is sure a better name than 'The Virginian'!"
shareI seem to remember an early episode where a woman (who apparently had known him in the past) addressed him as "Jim". As usual, Virginian didn't correct her,so it's not definitive, but a certain possibility.
This seems to have some merit since Drury later made an appearance in one of the Kenny Rogers "Gambler" movies, one with numerous cameos from former TV Western stars playing their signature characters (ex. Chuck Connors as Lucas McCain) and Drury's name in that role is "Jim" as well.
Let's call him 'Alias'. Alias anything you please. That's what I'd do.
shareJames Drury once "revealed" that The Virginian's first name is "Wes."
Drury and Doug McClure once appeared on "Laugh In" dressed as their characters on the show. McClure, as Trampas, asked him what his first name was. After The Virginian said "Wes," Trampas replied that meant he was "The Wes Virginian."
