TV Land is Butchering This

Watch TBH as it's now airing on TV Land. TV Land is cutting these shows to ribbons to make room for more commercials (mostly "High School Reunion" promos) and the difference is noticeable.
Jokes are missing. Important plot twists disappear. There are some episodes that have been so butchered, they don't make sense anymore. I saw an episode yesterday that cut right to the final scene in a way that left me completely confused. Something was missing that was necessary for the storyline to make sense.
I'm glad TV Land is running the show, but someone is trying to cut a 26-minute-long show down to about 20 minutes, and it doesn't always work.

You make a valid point. But whether it's Viacom or TV Land, this show is getting cut to the bone, and it's hurting the overall quality. Like I say, someone is taking out so much of the content, episodes don't always make sense.

reply

I saw an episode the other night where Elly May clearly had not finished her comment and it cut to the next scene!! Frankly I suspect TV Land is at fault because as has been noted, back in 1963 there was only four or five minutes of commercials per half hour show whereas today it is at least double that and possibly 12 minutes on some shows.

I do think it's TV Land who's editing it, because I had watched it on WGN before, and the shows were edited differently.

Whoever is responsible, I agree they're doing a lousy job.

reply

[deleted]

The same is also happening to "I LOVE LUCY." I am only 40 years old, but I have been a fan of this show since seeing it for the first time in the 70's.

The main thing that is annoying me about TV Land is that they are now into reality show's. Why do they have to do this? Aren't we getting enough of this on the other network's?

reply

[deleted]

This has hit a nerve with me. What is it with TV Land? It's almost as if whoever is in charge is trying to kill the channel. Not that I have anything against westerns, but I find it hard to believe those get ratings half as good as the comedies.

Now, they're even showing movies. How do they figure theatrical movies (which have enough exposure on other channels, anyway) into a network devoted to television?

reply

[deleted]

I don't mind the westerns at all. They're a refreshing change from such garbage as GOOD TIMES, THE JEFFERSONS, THREE'S COMPANY--and especially, JUST SHOOT ME.
I wish TVLand would air other western gems from the 50's and 60's: MAVERICK, THE RIFLEMAN, BRONCO, CHEYENNE, SUGARFOOT, RAWHIDE. Also other great dramas: PERRY MASON, THE DEFENDERS, THE UNTOUCHABLES, DRAGNET.
TVLand is going downhill, and a change of management just might revive it.

reply

Mary Tyler Moore, The Bob Newhart Show, Newhart, Batman, The Green Hornet, WKRP, Combat!, Rat Patrol, 12 O'Clock High, Mission Impossible, Lou Grant, Trapper John, Lost in Space, Time Tunnel, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea are currently being shown on the American Life channel. I don't know if this is a common cable channel.

I don't know why TVLand is showing movies - many of which are shown without commercials on some other channels. TVLand has some screwed up programming at times - like 4 straight hours of Bonanza or Gunsmoke or showing the same episode of a show twice a day. I don't know why they do some of the programming the way they do.

reply

I have American Life and I enjoy watching the shows that you mentioned. And I agree that TVLand should not show movies because they butcher them to death and I have most of them on DVD anyway.

reply

I live in NYC and subscribe to Time Warner Cable. I have never heard of American Life Channel, and I wonder if it goes by another name here.
And I hope it's not a premium channel. Time Warner overcharges for just basic cable.

reply

" I have never heard of American Life Channel, and I wonder if it goes by another name here."

Can't answer your question, but the line-up mentioned sounds like what I get on MeTV.
Along with 'The Honeymooners', 'Dick van Dyke Show', 'Twilight Zone', 'Kojak' & 'The Rockford Files', just name a few.

And best of all, it's over-the-air. No cable involved.

Who likes all these shows, other than maybe The Jefferesons, which have gotten old and that Just Shoot me???!!! Gawd.. Somebody needs to Shoot that show. All those other shows are on the Western channel. I haven't seen MacGyver. What time is that on? Must be after midnight and before daylight.

reply

love Just Shoot Me. See Puppetmaster!

Because those shows are boring and were done to death. They still have Leave it To Beaver and talk about boring!!!

reply

Boring? I'd say the Nielsens would disagree with you.

reply

I LOVE Leave It to Beaver!!! It reminds me of my childhood. And the other day, there was an episode on I had never seen which featured Beaver's Lionel electric trains (which I still have)! Also, most of the other shows you mentioned like Hazel, Dick Van Dyke, Dragnet, Route 66, etc. are now being shown on MeTV in Los Angeles.

How about TV Land trying to get ratings by adding reality shows like High School Reunion. It was advertised so much that I just had to tune in to see what it was all about. Like I though, it stunk. TV Land gets to get back to its original premise. There is such much all there from the 50's, 60's, and 70's that there is something for everyone. We don't need to be "westerned" to death. I have had enough Gunsmoke and Bonanza.

reply

[deleted]

You're so right about that show. I tuned in because of all the promos, and had enough after 10 minutes. It's THE most boring reality show I've ever seen.

reply

Is it possible to let TVLand know how bad is their practice of showing movies and horrid "original" shows like HIGH SCHOOL REUNION? If there is enough public protest (not to mention lousy ratings) then maybe the network would return to the format it was created for.

TV Land has many message boards at:

and the one for "Programming Suggestions" is at:

Not surprisingly, there's a hate thread for "High School Reunion" at:

Thank you.

TV Land absolutely butchers the Andy Griffith Show.

This network is a disgrace.

reply

To get back to 'The Beverly Hillbillies,' the show often has story arcs that last for four or five episodes -- sometimes more. Naturally, the storyline doesn't make sense if you show the episodes out of order. It's like a soap opera.
Tonight (Thursday, March 20th), TV Land showed an episode with the Clampetts in New York at Central Park. Except we have no idea how they got there, because they didn't show the episode that's supposed to air before it. Without setting it up right, this episode doesn't make sense.
TV Land: get your act together.

reply

[deleted]

Yes, and they take some of the funniest lines out of Andy Griffith Show as they butcher. It's a real shame.

reply

It would be great if TV land (or any channel/network) could be convinced to back away from the so called "reality" shows but unfortunately this type of inane programming seems to boost ratings rather than driving them down.

reply

I stopped watching it after 5 minutes. Shouldn't these 37 or 38 year olds have a life???????

reply

If they would show some of the other Westerns from the 50's besides Bonanza and Gunsmoke it would be a big improvement. There's nothing wrong with those 2 shows except that they've been shown to death. There were way more Westerns from the 1950's than most people are aware of. I'm too young to recall them 1st hand since I was born in 1960, but I've been buying all the 1950's Westerns I can find on DVD lately and I'm amazed at how good some of them were. Why these aren't shown more on reruns is beyond me.

Even if they DID start showing them, I'd still much prefer to own them on DVD so I know I have the uncut version and can watch them on my own time and in original broadcast sequence.

reply

If you want good classic TV shows,American Life TV Network is taking over where TV Land, Nick-at-Nite and the Hallmark Channel FAILED!!!

I can't believe TV Land has butchered classic TV shows to make room for that reality crap that has killed the television sitcom today.

I know that "The Dick Van Dyke Show" has been dissed by TV Land and went directly to the American Life TV network(premieres in mid-October of 2008 as part of its Monday night schedule)...same with "The Mary Tyler Moore Show"
,"The Bob Newhart Show",and "WKRP In Cincinnati".

Also check out RTN too(Retro Television Network).

reply

I have counted an average TEN commercials on a typical TV Land 6 pm weekday show. That ten is just the opening ads! I quit counting after that!

reply

TV Land is the worst. They butcher the shows, run banners all the way through them and then cut the closing credits for more promos. I watch The Hillbillies on WGN Chicago in the mornings sometimes. The editing seems better and they do let you hear the closing theme, even though they use squish screen.

reply

TVLand is getting worse and worse with this kind of crap. First they started cutting off part of the half hour shows for more commercials. Now they're cutting off even more plus they don't even have the closing credits anymore because they're always promoting either that high school reunion show or now some kind of stupid reality garbage show about people's 40th birthday. TVLand needs to go back to its roots and forget all this reality garbage.

reply

Check out the American Life TV Network which has better classic shows and better classic lineups....I heard Dick Van Dyke's classic 1960's sitcom is premiering in mid-October on American Life TV as part of its Monday night lineup opposite Mary Tyler Moore, Newhart, The Bob Newhart Show, and WRKP in Cincinnati.

reply

TV land IS at fault, they're the ones making room for commercial time to make money.. the thing is.. if they lose viewers because they're not showing the show the way it should be or a properly edited version there will be less advertisers interested in buying time with less people watching... DO THE RIGHT THING TV LAND!

Don't you mena 30 minute long show? All tv stations are doing it. Try watching LHOTP and The Waltons , among others. They cut out a lot and when you watched the orginals and reruns when they were left in tact (or you recorded them and played them back until they broke) you notice little things. TBHB went to a commerical and came back with rolling credits. I was like huh thats it what happened.. where'd it go.. what happened. They didn't even do what you're saying tv land is doing when I grew up watching Beverly Hillbillies and they were in reruns then since the show went off the air when I was very young.

WHY IN HELL ARE REALITY SHOWS TAKING OVER TV LAND!? TV Land is supposed to be a station for CLASSIV TV, not reality shows!

Most people see things that are and ask "why?", I dream things that never were and ask, "why not?"

reply

I was just going to say... TV LAND is starting to really suck !

reply

[deleted]

TV Land does suck! I watch all the classic shows on "ME TV". Fewer commercials, episodes seem complete. Call me knitpicky but I am one who likes to see the closing credits and not have the closing credits minimized on the screen to see an advertisement for something else. TV Land completely ruins the closing credits on "TBH". No Clampetts opening the door and waving goodbye. I'm starting to understand now why more and more people are going the TV on DVD boxed sets route for shows.

reply

Now that you mention it, TVLand sucks and I hate how they push the credits over and P.O.'s me off when I want to see who played a certain part. I never noticed the no waving goodbye but it is no wonder this show makes no sense what they had orginally isn't there, I saw it during the 70s and it still makes no sense to me. Never heard of me TV but sounds better then tv land.

reply

Now they are showing Scrubs. What happened to classic shows? TV Land is selling out.

The game of life is hard to play,
I'm gonna lose it anyway.

reply

When I saw that show was coming to TVL, I wept. Repeatedly.

Then it actually got worse. Ext. Makeover Home and 3rd Rock, and this past weekend they showed Lethal Weapon, of all things.

I'm surprised the star trek fans haven't bombed TVL's offices yet for what they do to that series every day.
