I've had to watch alot of rather drab Italian films as part of my Italian cinema module at university and I've got to say, 'Il Posto' is definitely my favourite out of the bunch. I've seen 'La Dolce Vita', 'Ossessione', 'La Strada' and 'Deserto Rosso' but none of them compare to this film atall.
I love the naturalness and sincerity of the actor's. Plus the subtle humour throughout the film is a nice balance seeing as the end is more or less depressing.
Lastly, the lead actress who played Antonietta (?) is gorgeous, I really believed that her and Domenico were going to have a happy ending *sigh*

If you believe there will be a happy ending in an Italian movie from this era you obviously failed your course ;)

That sounds like a brutal class. I love Italian cinema, but only when it's on my own terms. I can't imagine being forced to show up at a specific time to watch Fellini and Antonioni. I took a Kubrick class that was a lot of fun, but I had one called "film styles and genres" that was a variety of films, many of them slow, and that was hard to do. Better than a typical lecture, of course, but with lectures I can tune out; with a film, I feel bad if I'm not engaged.

You could probably elaborate on this better than I can, but it seems to me like Italian cinema either takes a very pretentious, abstract direction, or a very straightforward, classical-cinema direction. I'm specifically thinking of Fellini. La Strada and I Vitelloni are quite a bit different from Juliet of the Spirits and 8 1/2, wouldn't you say?

Statistics is a brutal class. Film class not so much.
That Italian Cinema class sounds awesome to me, what a treat. Studying film is about understanding the art form, not liking every film you see.

I loved this film too. Amazing how the dialogue is secondary to the facial gestures of the actors. It was almost like mime. Awesome film, totally underrated.

Not only underrated - seems like it's underSEEN judging by the lack of discussion on here.

What a powerful look into what it means to be stuck in hopelessness. Absolutely riveting and so hypnotic. No wonder it's one of Malick's favorite films. The loss of innocence is so crucial as a theme in this film.
