How did Burt Lancaster NOT get an Oscar nomination?

In fact, how did he not any ANY awards for this role? The speech he gives in this film, his testimony, is one of the most powerful and harrowing minutes I have ever seen on screen.

I am not what I am

He did a fine job. But I felt his accent would go in and out at time. Not a big problem, but you've got to nail that to be taken more seriously.

Its amazing how many actors turned in career or near career performances,
Lancaster, Schell, Clift, Tracy, Dietrich, Garland

I thought that Richard Widmark kinda sucked. And I'm usually a big Widmank fan

The Man in Black fled across the desert and the Gunslinger followed.

You left out Captain Kirk.

Shatner was barely in the film and the only noteworthy thing about his performance is the fact that he, surprisingly, didn't chew the scenery, for a change.

Agree...
He was excellent...
not merely for the speech...but also for the expressive acting.

"We are God's unwanted children? So be it!"

He was good but it probably the fifth best peformance in the film.

There wasn't a bad one. William Shatner had a good performance. The girl who said, "Auf wiedersehen, papa", was a good performance.

I would hope that even in 1961 that kind of hammy acting wasn't considered all that great. Schell totally deserved it.

Lancaster was very very average in this. There's a way to play a role silently but he just couldn't find it in this character. It's a tricky thing to pull off. Samantha Morton did it pretty well in Sweet and Lowdown. Lancaster was a good actor, he just didn't nail his performance like Clift and Garland did.

If you look at the fact for two thirds of the movie it's all facial expressions that Burt uses to convey his emotions that shows his acting chops Then his riveting speech and final scene with SPENCER Tracey tops off the movie, although Maximillian Schell's performance as Herr Rolfe was deserving of an Oscar.
