Timeline of Rob Petrie stumbling over the ottoman in the intro

In some intros, Rob Petrie stumbles over the ottoman; in others, he steps around it. Was there a specific episode in which he started to step around the ottoman and continued to do so for the rest of the series; or was it random?

reply

It was random.

But speaking of timeline, there's the eternal unanswered question: If Rob is coming home from work, why are Buddy and Sally already there?

reply

I'd say there are two explanations.

We saw in several episodes that Rob works late. Either with Alan Brady going over that week's script. Or with the guest star of that week's show for the same reason.

They were gonna meet up at Rob's house or surprise him.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

reply

There was a third opening where he side steps the ottomon and then makes a stumble but not a total fall on the carpet.

"Starring Dick Van Dyke; Mary Tyler Moore; Rose Marie; Morey Amsterdam; and Larry Matthews." They are there because they are the top-billed actors.

But logic-wise, there are any number of possible explanations for the presence of Buddy and Sally, who've been guests at the Petrie home innumerable times.

No, MTM was last billed.

Another Zombie thread that started on IMDb, but Vinidici was right. Their appearance is due to their presence as regular cast, and this opening isn't as odd as Hamilton Burger and Lt. Tragg sitting at the defense table--and passing a document around--with Perry Mason in the early season openings of THAT series. LOL Not that I don't very much enjoy Perry Mason. I watched it back in the TBS days and probably cycled through it 5 or 6 times.

It's been quite a while since we watched this show, so my memory is hazy -- but it's my recollection that in the original network run, they started out with him always tripping. Later (one of the subsequent seasons?) they had him sidestep (and maybe used that version for a while?), then starting semi-randomly using one or the other.

For a while, I was pretty good at telling whether he'd trip or sidestep, because there were some other (minor) differences.

In one of the DVD commentaries, Carl Reiner explained that they filmed several versions to keep viewers guessing and watching closely to see which opening would be used.

After Season 1. As far as I can remember, all or most of Season 1 had an opening with a montage of still photos of cast members. The original opening music accompanying it was a version of the regular theme, but with bongo interludes.
