I can't think of a movie that does a better job at grounding a fantastic situation in reality. The low-key, almost documentary-like presentation adds to the effect. I've watched this several times, and each time I'm engrossed in the story.
I rated this a 10, and I think it deserves it. What did you rate this movie? And what do you think of it?
A 10 is an absurd score. I really love the idea of this story. I haven't read the book, but I'd like to (though I've heard it's a boring read). I've seen the 1995 version many times and like it though it has many severe flaws in it. I finally watched this version today and it was pretty dull. One of the flaws of the John Carpenter version are that most of the characters and the story itself aren't particularly well developed and that flaw is even stronger in this version. It's a very short movie that blows right through the story. Hardly anything happens. They talk about things happening, but they rarely show them. Someone declares the kids 'evil' but they hadn't shown them do anything remotely bad at that point in the movie. They talk about how intelligent the kids are, but they rarely show it. They talk about deaths, but show very few. All of the problems with the remake are in this version, too, but stronger. Less characterization, less plot, bad models. OK, I'll give the bad models a pass for this one (but not the 1995 one because there's no excuse there) and I'll ignore the stilted acting because that's just how they did it back then, but the other things I can't ignore. But, you know, this movie is old so people automatically think it's fantastic because that's the way people are. It's not a bad movie or anything, but it's far from great, even for movies of it's time. It's a mediocre telling of a really good story. The 1995 version tells it better, but it's still got issues. Maybe someone will do another one and hit it right because there's so much potential for a really great movie with this story.
I think the 1995 version totally sucks and doesn't even deserve 1 star. Absurd or not, I stick to my rating - it's a personal opinion, which we are all entitled to. So PM of the S, if you prefer the Carpenter version - fair enough.
