It is better than 'The Bicycle Thief' and 'Rome, Open City' combined. This is my favorite Italian neorealist film, along with La Strada, but La Strada is maybe not a pure neorealist film.

shareYes it is. Although there are some controversies, I think the general opinion sees Rocco and His Brothers as one of the last neo-realist films -- alongside with Pasolini's Accattone. Besides, if one looks at the aesthetic and contextual trademarks of neo-realism, one will find Rocco among the style. I think this might as well be the best even if it's quite hard to compare with Bicycle Thieves, Umberto D, Rome Open City, Paisa, Ossessione or The Earth Trumbles.
