which do you think's better, the 1960 version of the 2001 version?

I was wondering which movie people was better, the 1960 version of Ocean's 11 or the 2001 version of Ocean's 11.

The 1960 version is better.

The 2001 Ocean's Eleven is one of my favorite movies. I just finished watching the original version and, frankly, I am extremely disappointed. The ending nearly salvaged the movie but otherwise it was so bland and boring I needed three days to watch it chunk by chunk. I was expecting more from the star studded cast. There are a few bits here and there that are fun and enjoyable but for the most part the movie sucked.

I agree about your emphasis, it was a great idea but the original crew didn't know how to effectively use it and wasted it trusting too much on star power. The 2001 version relied more on a better utilization of the same idea than on their power hitters.

Although the 2001 remake isn't great, it is miles better than the original which seems to be a home movie of a bunch of cronies. The first half is atrocious, with poor acting, no plot, & an extremely annoying fat man. The 2nd part at least has a resemblence of a story, & if they cut at least 30 minutes from the start, with better editing it might work better

reply

Indeed, the first 50 minutes or so of the movie are horrible and don't have a point of existing besides being filler. The second half was better but still a wasted opportunity.

The '01 version isn't blatantly misogynist. Also, it has George Clooney. Win.

Unless you love, your life will flash by.

reply

It's not worth having a discussion over. The two have little in common except for the title and a couple of Clooney relatives (or not).

I prefer the 2001 version
The 1960 version is stupid...

lol you call a film stupid? So using a 'pinch' (which doesn't exist) to black out teh casino isn't? Oh and lets put lasers in the vault to give that acrobat something to do. At least the original was plausible, and didn't have that stupid romantic side plot (read: Julia Roberts) which Hollywood always puts in these days whether it be at the bottom of the sea (Sphere etc) or up in space (Gravity). I like some new movies, but most are just rehashed stories full of explosions and CGI.

And you're a Star Wars fan? HA!

reply

I didn't say the 2001 version isn't stupid, i just said i prefer it. The 1960 version makes robbing a casino seem like child's play and registers more like a comedy than a "serious" heist film. I didn't like the ending either, it ruined the film for me. That is only my opinion, sorry if you disagree.
I usually enjoy older movies they are very original and have plausibility and portray true interactions amongst people. I like many new films also, some are quite interesting.
And yes, I am a Star Wars fan. I must say I sometimes enjoy Science fiction films as they are a way for me to escape reality and perhaps indulge me to think out of the box.

A quick shout out to Esquire Network for showing Ocean's Eleven 1960 twice this weekend. Thank you!! 😁

Nothing will ever compare to the simplicity of that era or capture the magic found in the group dynmatics of the Rat Pack. The film wasn't meant to be a cinematic masterpiece but succeeds in giving us a glorious snapshot of less cynical time that will never return. Younger people who think the original OE was "boring" can't possibly understand what they've missed.

The only "magic" involved is nostalgia haze.

One of the rare cases where the new film tops the old.

I generally like the slower goings of older movies, but the 1960 Ocean was a bit 'too' lethargic for its own good. The 2001 film also gets points for presenting a more complex heist plot and stronger acting - which is hardly surprising considering the first movie's built around these rat guy entertainers, while the second is populated by high caliber professional actors. I did, however, like Sinatra's performance as well as Dickinson's.

I have seen the contemporary Ocean movies quite a few times. I finally saw this one and...
I'd say this one is the real deal. Without it we would have never seen the new series.
Besides, watching the Rat Pack is awesome!

Also, I would say that this movie in those days must have made quite some noise; whereas the newer versions although great, compete heavily with other similar ones.

I'll go with the Rat Pack version.
