Who was the guy in black?

The one who pays off the coach driver at the beginning and enters the inn when everybody goes quiet? Suddenly he disappears from the movie entirely.

i read somewhere that there was a lot changed during production so he may have had a larger role that got changed or removed completely. i guess we could suggest that the villagers knew the Baroness would be in town that night so he decided to pay the coach driver to leave Marianne stranded so the Baroness would take her instead of one of the village girls

At first I thought he was the priest, because they look sort of similar.

I think he would have been a fairly interesting character to have been featured in the film. Too bad they decided to essentially erase the character from the finished product.

Casualty of rewrites, apparently. It was pretty glaring that he suddenly vanished from the story after they built him up as such a sinister figure.
