I mean, top 100, really??

Please explain what is so funny about this film, cause I didnt find it hilarious at all.

I mean, top 100, really??

Some people said that it is not possible to do a remake of this "brilliant" film. Well I've got news for you folks: it has been done. A lot of them. Starring Owen Wilson or Adam Sandler in the main role, and you'll probably catch it on a saturday afternoon in the generalist channels.

I mean, come on!! It just isnt funny, it's just a predictable romance film!

that's it.

It is by no means in my Top 100, though a good movie which I wouldn't begrudge anyone having as one of their favourites.

You're going about watching the movie in the wrong way. It's like you wanted to watch a comedy, saw comedy as one of the listed genres on IMDB for the movie, and watched it expecting to laugh out loud.. then you wait for the jokes and they're not really there like how you expected them. Just watch it as a drama (don't because i'm sure you won't like it anyway), watch the characters and see if you care for them.. you're not supposed to be waiting for jokes.

I agree! It should be in Top 3.

thats the most laughable statement I've ever seen. The characters, the acting and the script is so memorable. It has so many great lines. And Jack Lemmon! Sandler and Wilson doesn't come close to legendary actor Lemmon.

It's got some witty lines but it's not meant to be totally hilarious like Some Like It Hot. However the audience of the cinema I saw it in today must have thought it was meant to be, hence their laughter at inappropriate moments, like when Lemmon finds MacLaine passed out on his bed after overdosing on sleeping pills.

Now it's only in the top 102, but I see many titles that are much weaker ahead of it. This is one of the select few films I rate a 10/10. I think it works much better as a drama than a comedy, but every line and scene are perfect in this film – as is each performance.

I don't know a lot of romantic comedies that aren't predictable: We know at the outset that the characters should be together, and they overcome their obstacles in the final scene to reach that realization. But the journey here makes up for that predictability because the writing and delivery are flawless.

The comments in this thread are astounding. The Apartment is not only an amazingly powerful film, it was revolutionary for its era. So many people in this thread have no understanding whatsoever of the prevailing mores of America in the late fifties, nor the social context that this film so beautifully transcends. My God, someone actually had the gall to liken this masterpiece to the pedestrian efforts of Adam Sandler and Owen Wilson.

STOP, PLEASE!

This is the essential problem with IMDb, indeed the internet in general. Too many people with no frame of reference acting as if their puny worldview is omniscient. The Apartment is far closer to Top 50 all-time than Top 100 but it's not my job to open the eyes of dullards who think they know film.

For me, not only top 100, but I'd put it at the number 1 spot. A perfect combination of comedy, drama, romance and tragedy, mixed with wonderful performances and outstanding direction.
