IMDb message boards being axed

I'm sure everyone's seen the announcement by now. I can't even begin to say how gutted I am about the news. 

reply

It's fxcking sh*t how we're just supposed to accept it

Nice knowing all you kids I suppose ...

Nooooooooo where am I going to bitch about everyone on Corrie 😲 this board is a great one and I'll genuinely miss it

reply

I'm truly gutted myself also. It still doesn't really feel real, just sinking in.

reply

Petition here.

https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/petition-to-keep-the-imdb-messageboards-going

reply

I've signed it.

Why not!

reply

Thanks for the link to the petition. I hope that we can cause a reconsideration in this matter.

I shall miss the IMDb message boards. Alter them as necessary to get rid of the problems but please don't have us lose them completely.

reply

I signed it last night and there were only a couple of us but now there are a few hundred. Its so short sighted. I don't really use IMDb for anything other than the message boards. I'm on Talking Pictures page on FB which gives me film info and there's wiki too.

I think they are making a huge mistake.

Goodnight, good luck and may your God go with you

reply

I won't bother with IMDb if they remove the boards. It offers nothing that Wiki doesn't (nothing that I want, anyway).

reply

I'm feeling very down about this also. I've just set up a new account as I couldn't get into my old one. I used to be jenc2009. Hi everyone lol. I don't really post much but I'm an avid reader. Gutted!!!!

reply

Or maybe I was 2005?? I can't really remember. It logged me in automatically from my phone. Wow. I'm getting old. (Slaps own forehead in despair).

reply

Thanks for pointing out the Talking Pictures page. There is so much information on IMDb that I will never give up on them but I hope that they do bring back the message boards sometime.

I suppose there must be costs running a message boards service so perhaps the decision is an economical one. But I can see the numbers of people using IMDb will drop like a stone with no message boards.

reply

Thanks laura1-07! I signed the petition last night and I've seen now there are over 3000 signatures.

reply

Once the petition has a certain number of signatures, how will we let IMDB know?

James?

reply

I'm guessing the creator of the petition will send it to whoever they need to. I wonder how many signatures would be needed to change their minds? I think even a million will be small-fry to them, sadly.

reply

They want 5000, so hopefully it will reach that amount. I think it will.

reply

Yes, that's the current target. Last night, they had set it to 2,500 and it quickly moved past that.

reply

Like everyone else, I'm pretty upset by this. Granted some of the message boards on imdb are pretty dead but this one has always been lively, good humoured for the most part, and friendly. I will miss it, and I will miss the regular contributors (Prems excepted). I doubt I will visit imdb very often afterwards as most of the time I just come on here to read or post on one of the boards. Occasionally I'll use the site if I see someone on TV and wonder what else I've seen them in, but that's rare. I've signed the petition but I doubt it will make any difference. Does anyone remember Newsgroups and rec.arts.tv.coronation-street? That died a death too but at least this imdb board was here.

I think the way forward (if the petition fails) would be for us to take our Corrie discussion to another forum, we just need to make sure we all migrate to the same one. Another option would be to create a closed Facebook group, but maybe some of you aren't on Facebook. Incidentally, if anyone wants to send me a friend request I'm the Alan Bloor who is Retired (Formerly Biomedical Scientist) at Leicester Royal Infirmary. Just make sure you mention that you are from the Corrie board because I don't know most of your real names and I tend to ignore requests from people if I don't know who they are.

reply

I'm so upset by this news as well! Not a very frequent poster on the Corrie board, but I'll look at it regularly and love to see what others make of whatever storylines are happening. I'm on Corrie's FB page, but there are a few extremely annoying people on there (you'll probably know who they are if you're members yourselves) and I don't feel it's a good atmosphere for proper discussion :(

Take a look at my reply just now to alanbloor, ballroom babe. We'll hopefully get some soap forums sorted and mentioned in the main forum's soap section.

Who knows, we may even squeeze in a Doctors one for us! 

In the meantime, if you haven't already, do join the forum in that post (or just check out staggerstags' thread about the similar board alternative). We're both on there now, as is bigbluecheese and Alan.

We're talking about setting up a Corrie forum which we could then add a link to in the main forum which I know you've already joined, Alan. Hopefully, that should keep most of the posters here together.

Keep an eye on this thread for further info:

Meh I'm in two minds about this - IMDB was becoming infested with psychotic comic book nerds and becoming a war zone of corporate studio cheerleading and Trump lovers, haters and blockbuster pessimists.... But on the other hand it was a great place to talk about shows like Corrie, EastEnders and the rest but in its entirety the site just wasn't worth it.

reply

Oh no this is sad news I love the imdb boards :(

reply

Haven't posted on here for ages, but I will miss the message boards and am very disappointed (though not entirely surprised) that IMDb decided to close them. I'll join the new forum shortly.

reply

I have just posted this on the Classic Film page, but I thought it might be appropriate to reproduce it here:

This is a sad time, isn't it.

I have been a member here for fourteen years. I haven't made that many posts, because I am not by nature a keyboard warrior, and have scarcely bothered with the other fora; but I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the many intelligent comments about films and their makers, both on Classic Film and on the individual pages.

I cannot say that I have noticed any trollery on Classic Films, but I used to contribute to the Coronation Street page. This section deteriorated quite alarmingly a few years ago, when somebody with too much time on his hands decided to start about thirty-five accounts, all of which were obviously the work of the same person and all of which were supposed to be written by Indian immigrants (although I suspect he may not have been subcontinental at all) and all of which were devoted entirely to discussing, at inordinate length and at a very poor standard of literacy, which actress had the biggest wazoos or the hairiest bush. Needless to say, whenever he was called up on this, he would cry racism. Well, I hope he is proud of himself for having destroyed such an excellent platform for communication.

Why this social inadequate was not moderated out of existence is a point worth questioning, because it would have been the work of a moment to have discovered his IP address and banned him. I wrote at the time (it has long since vanished into the ether) that, a few years previously, I myself had two posts removed. One was about Helen Mirren and the other was about Sarah Miles and, yes, I can see how somebody who had led a very sheltered life might have been upset by what I had written. But at least I gave every indication that I had, at some point in my life, been alone in the company of a woman, which is more than can be said for this troll, who probably still lived with his mother. Not that there would be anything wrong with that if one's mother looked like Lea Massari or Jill Clayburgh or Julianne Moore or, indeed, Helen Mirren or Sarah Miles; but most people's mothers don't. Mine didn't, for a start.

Come to think of it, I had several other posts removed, but all of the rest were about how fat and repulsive Kate Winslet is, which doesn't really qualify!

I have just this minute signed up for IMDB2, which one hopes is going to prove a reasonable replacement for our sad loss, although it can never hope to emulate the amazing wealth of detail to be found here, and which, thankfully, is not going to be removed just yet. I had a quick look at the Reddit site, which someone else recommended, but I didn't like the look of it; I may be wrong. Another site was mentioned, with a very similar name to this one (can't remember exactly what; I'll search for it when I have finished writing this) but I haven't visited that one yet.

After I have eaten, I am going to send P.M.s to some of the contributors whose posts I have enjoyed reading here. No doubt, I shall forget to mention a whole string of people, to whom I offer my apologies.

Good luck to everyone, and let us hope that we find a new home. It is a shame that, through the idiocy of some of its contributors and the negligence of its proprietors, this one has been allowed to fall into such neglect.

Follow your spirit; and upon this charge
Cry, God for Harry, England, and St. George!
