1-8 Opie's Charity

This episode has two stories going on.
One involves Opie and his lack of giving to a charity.
The other involves Tom Silby who comes back to town. Problem is he is thought to be dead.
His wife Annabelle was to proud to tell everybody her husband left her so she told them he had died.

Some great funny scenes in this one. Andy is trying to explain to Opie why he should be more
charitable. That scene might be one of the funniest between the two.
He's explaining that there's 1.5 boys in the county in need of help.
Opie replies he ain't never seen half a boy. Andy tells his its a ratio.
Opies says poor Horatio. The he goes on to explain he is a giving person.
He gave his friend Jimmy a sock in the head and didn't charge him nothing.

One of the best scenes between these two. IMO
We later find out Opie was saving up to buy his girlfriend a coat.
you and Aunt Bee's havin' fried chicken, and I'm havin' crow.
Once again Andy has misjudged Opie and his parenting skills.

Andy also has some great scenes with Annabelle and Tom Silby.

Things I noticed.
First episode without Barney. No explanation.
They mention a Mayor Jenkins. I don't remember ever seeing or hearing that name again.
They do mention him in relation to the funeral which was two years prior.
This episode also offers another lesson learned.

This bears a similarity to an episode I saw the other day, Opie And His Merry Men, where he develops a misguided sense of charity through the notion of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. He and his buddies are playing Robin Hood in the woods one day when they come upon a hobo who cons the boys into pilfering groceries from all over town.

At the end, a very good scene where Opie innocently yet shrewdly corners Andy on being hypocritical about lying.

I remember that episode.
I never realized it before but it seems Andy learned just as many lessons as Opie did.

There's also another episode concerning an old war cannon where Opie does the same thing.

I love that episode. Even Barney gets involved. Andy keeps asking him "You wanna buy this cannon"

I'm going to have to start keeping track of this. How many lessons are learned by each of them .

This is a top 5 episode for me

It really is a great episode.
Two separate stories that kind of intertwine to teach a lesson.
The scene with Andy and Opie is one of the best.
