Which director now reminds you of the early Godard?

For me its Lars Von Trier and his body of work thus far?

He combines wonderful artistry and colours, with social comment. His films are extremely original and refreshing to watch and he is so experimental with camera, sound and theme. His style is also considerably brechtian ("Dogville" and "Manderlay") just like Godard.

He definitely reminds me of an early Godard.

Anyone else agree?

For me, I don't think there will be another Godard. What he did to cinema and the conditions in which he did it are simply unrepeatable.

And, whisper it, I think that's a good thing. With Godard, I find there to be a certain arrogance which distances me from his films. I much prefer Truffaut, far warmer. But that probably says more about me as a person.

Also Trier is experimental, but he at least makes films that the audience can connect with and have some kind of basic underlying story, which I don't get with Godard. Godard was a cinematic genius, probably, but he left emotions at the door, and that's just not for me.

Early Von Trier made some genre experiments like Godard (Element of Crime, Europa) but, the style is quite different.
