Carroll Baker should have played Sugar

If MM was indeed "troubled" and on the verge of a nervous breakdown, she should have been fired for the good of everyone. Baker is a MUCH better actress and would have saved the money that MM cost the production company. Baker was nominated for Baby Doll, her FIRST MOVIE!!!! Monroe should have been committed to an institution and stayed there. She probably would have lived longer.

There is no "off" position on the genius switch.

I love Carroll Baker..but there's only one Marilyn Monroe.

Assuming for the purpose of discussion that you are not trolling, I don't agree MM should have been fired for the sake of everyone (I mean, Billy Wilder obviously didn't feel that way, he used her in the film to great advantage, no matter how difficult she might have been), and I don't agree Baker 'is a MUCH better actress'. And any 'money that MM cost the production company' was recouped later due to her wonderful presense and established stardom. As to Marilyn's need to be institutionalized, well, that's another question. Maybe so, maybe not. I'd leave that to the professionals to determine.

I disagree. Marilyn was so worth the time, stress and money, as Wilder always admitted when talking of the way she was during the film.

She was simply amazing in this film.

there is no doubt marilyn was the best dumb blonde ever, if there was an oscar for wiggling and pouting she would have won 100s, as for acting please do not compare her with the great carroll baker, carroll was an a actress, marilyn was a film star a massive film star, also carroll took the marilyn root in the 1960s, when she appeared in the carpetbaggers, harlow, sylvia, etc, glamor and acting

Oh look, yet another poster pulling out that old, tired, and unoriginal "real actresses" vs. Marilyn Monroe argument. How predictable and boorish.

First of all, Duchess, if you want your post to be taken seriously, learn how to punctuate -- there's something called a period. There's also something called capitalization. (e. e. cummings you're not.)

Secondly, if you're going to reference some of Baker's "serious" acting roles, you shouldn't be mentioning her ridiculously caricatured, almost laughable performances in "Harlow" and "The Carpetbaggers." As evidenced in films such as "Baby Doll" and "Something Wild," Baker's a good actress, but she's never been anything exceptional. She also lacked Monroe's comedic talents and star quality.

And lastly, how many Oscars has Carroll Baker won throughout her career?

reply

Baker is a candle. Monroe is the cake.

reply

Carol Baker was not fit to stand in Marilyn Monroe's shadow.

reply

CB was lovely and talented. I am surprised she didn't become a bigger star. Perhaps she wasn't interested. However, I cannot picture any other actress being equal to MM in this film. She was such a highlight, Imho no one could have been better.

reply

Caroll Baker may have been an easier actress to work with and she's obviously talented but she did not have the star power to co-star with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. She was also too young at the time.

As far as MM needing to be locked away, unless you're a professional psychiatrist (and judging from your writing and flippant attitude towards someone who was exhibiting signs of real problems, I hope to God you're not), save the armchair diagnosis for your counsel of stuffed animals.

reply

I do not know if I could picture Carroll Baker as "THE DUMB BLONDE".

reply

Just... No.

maybe you need to go into a mental institution.

reply

Her? Those are fighting words!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carroll Baker never had Marilyn's sex appeal and comedic timing. Marilyn just jumps off the screen.
