White Man's Fantasy

The idea that this young, beautiful woman is going to be throwing herself at an old, cranky sheriff is ludicrous.

Especially because he is wearing a wedding ring!

She says she's hard to get, and yet is undressing behind a panel right after saying that?

Yeah, right. This is a ridiculous fantasy.

Plus the fact that the old sheriff could be killed at any moment, and she could have just about any man she wants.

The mexican guy is basically portrayed as a short, servile clown.

(That gets a black eye from his wife).

Original Poster,
Feel free to go watch something else and to go post somewhere else. I won't insist you stick around.

OP,
You couldn't be more wrong about Carlos. he is a stout friend to Sheriff Chance when few others in town were willing to stand up and be counted. He showed up at the final shoot-out with the Burdettes with his shotgun to back up Chance- would you have done as much? I doubt it.

Why a white man's fantasy? If I had a nickel for every aging man of color I've seen leering and flirting who thought he was gonna get with some young honey out of his league, I'd own Citibank. Besides, in no way does the movie generalize that an over-the-hill guy in the audience can rate Angie Dickinson, it only says that John Wayne can. When you've been a big iconic Hollywood start for 30 or 40 years, right through the whole sound era, you're not just a guy of a certain age, and the ordinary rules don't apply to you onscreen. And on top of that, in the movie Angie is in kind of a spot. She needs a guy, and there's nobody in the movie who's a better candidate than Wayne.

The Republican Plan: repeal all reform; collect payoffs; go yachting (but not in the Gulf).

Uh..you realise the movie was made in 1959 right? Not 1989, 1999, or 2009?

In 1968 on TV guys like Ricardo Montalban would play Asians, Latin, or even Indian or Native characters. In fact considering they had actors portraying Chinese, and Hispanic roles done buy non-white actors (not that they were given great roles) is probably "liberal" for 1959. Even Rick Nelson was fairly long haired, and rather young for a movie.

Look at John Ford's 1960 movie Sergeant Rutledge. Woody Strode played the title character but didn't get top billing and he was the central character!

As far as I'm concerned Hollywood missed the boat on Woody. I thought he could have easily been a Black Clint Eastwood. But Hollywood wasn't ready for that in the 50's and early 60's.

"White Man's Fantasy"? Shouldn't that be "older man's fantasy"? What the hell does race have to do with it?

(Granted, Carlos is a stereotype.)

The love story element was a bit hard to take, it would had made more sense for Angie Dickenson to had gone for Dean Martin.

Its that man again!!

I wish Clint Eastwood made an impression 1 year earlier in Hollywood.

He'd have been perfect for the role, closer to age with Angie, and he'd actually play a character.

Not John Wayne playing John Wayne.

"I wish Clint Eastwood made an impression 1 year earlier in Hollywoood"

He didn't make an impression in Hollywood until the late 60's. All he was was a TV star. He had to go to Europe to become a movie star. He was in Rawhide for 7 years and never got offered an Hollywood movie, that's hardly making an impression.

"He'd have been perfect for the role, closer to the age of Angie, and he'd actually play a character"

He'd have been crap. With the exception of Unforgiven,Eastwood just plays the tough lone gunslinger,so it's funny how you say he'd actually play a character.Even Josey Wales was basically The Man With No Name with chewing tobacco instead of cigars. John T.Chance has to be tough, compassionate to his friends, banter with them and be shy and awkward with Feathers.Wayne nailed it.Eastwood would've been an embarassment. He always stayed in that same silent, introverted character.

"Not John Wayne playing John Wayne"

The Ringo Kid,Ethan Edwards, Tom Dunson,Rooster Cogburn etc. Different. Apart from Unforgiven, what was the difference in Eastwood's cowboy characters???

I'd vote for OP to go back to Reddit.

They deserve each other.

Either way, they aren't mature enough to be on IMDB.

"White man's fantasy"? What's white about it? Don't black or other non-white men have fantasies about younger women?
