Music from Rio Bravo
I've always loved the scene in the jail with Martin and Nelson singing, Duke and Brennan watching and enjoying. Was a soundtrack from this film ever released?

shareNot that I know of. I found "Rifle Pony" somewhere on the net. It's a gem. On iTunes they only have a Dean Martin version with orchestra plus a lot of others, but not the original.

They only sang two songs. I guess that's perfect for a single.
sharei got "my rifle my pony and me" on a compilation of the same title on I-Tunes.
It's a nice compilation -- has a great Jimmy Stewart ballad of Shennendoah monologue in it.
Country singer Don Williams did a lovely cover of the song on his 1995 CD BORROWED TALES. The album, as the name implies, is devoted to covers of all sorts of music. Some work better than others, as can be expected, but Williams' take on the Dean Martin song is a highlight. I think the CD is out of print these days, but you can probably find it on the internet somewhere or at a used record store. Good Luck!

I did a quick search and it's probably not going to be easy vinyl to find. The photo on the cover shows Ricky Nelson, meaning they probably figured they'd sell more to girls that would buy anything with his picture on it than anything else.

Ebay has some folks selling compilation CD's that have a couple of the songs from the movie on them.
I thought the two songs were excellent – Ricky Nelson and Dean Martin did a wonderful job. Does anyone know if John Wayne ever sang in any of his movies?
There was a release of "My Rifle, My Pony, and Me" on a CD of the same name, with a spoken word introduction by John Wayne, no less. Unfortunately, he talks over some of the song. I finally got fed up and stripped the soundtrack of a DVD I have of the movie to get a "clean" version of it.
Interesting trivia note: the tune for "My Rifle, My Pony and Me" comes from a previous John Wayne-Howard Hawks film, the classic "Red River." The music in both movies was credited to Dmitri Tiompkin. The song in Red River is called "Settle Down," but its the same tune.
I like the version on "My Rifle My Pony and Me" because of Wayne's very personable intro --- something like "Hello this is John Wayne. Two of my co-stars from Rio Bravo, Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson sing a mighty pretty tune. Thought you'd like to hear them"
BUT -- the recording doesn't have the intro stanza from Dean Martin
"Sun is sinking in the west
The cattle go down to the stream
The redwing settles in the nest
It's time for a cowboy to dream"
Which I like a lot -- sure wish I had the know-how to strip a DVD of the audio like that to record it in full -- if you happen to wander by this thread again, and have a link that could show a body how to extract that audio, I'd be much obliged for it.
Thanks

I don't have a link, but it's pretty simple. Play the DVD of the movie on a player or TV that has an earphone jack. Take a two-end mini-stereo plug and run it from the TV or player to the "mic input" on your PC.
Get the free program "Audacity" (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) and install it on your PC. Play the film and FF to the song. You can play the song and record it at the same time; Audacity will make a .wav file, which you can turn into an MP3 and import into your MP3 player.
You can find the original song (My Rifle, My Pony & Me) on itunes. It's creditied to Ricky Nelson and is on his Legacy album. I think it was part of his contract that he get credit for the song even though Dean Martin was the principal performer. And yes, I also remember the song from Red River. Great song.

That's a fantastic scene. I'm a sucker for non-musical films in which a group of people or someone sing in just one scene. Like the “Tiny Dancer” scene in Almost Famous, “Wise Up” in Magnolia, “Sans Toi” in Cleo from 5 to 7, “Life is Brief” in Ikiru, "In Dreams" in Blue Velvet and so on. I was already liking Rio Bravo, but that scene is gold.
Language! The thing that means stuff.
I love this song but my favourite music from the movie has got to be the trumpet played by the mexican, the whole scene was brilliant.
