-- blowing up the tunnel??

Was that standard archaeological practice in those days: Find tomb. Loot tomb. Blow tomb up?

Was this ever explained??

I wondered that as well. Seems to add insult to injury to not only remove all artifacts, but to then implode the whole structure.

I have spoken to dozens of archaeologists over the years all around the world and they all said its custom to blow it up afterwards

Early depictions of archaeologists on film was little different than from grave-robbing. Then again, some 19th century archaeologists were little more than just grave robbers. Heinrich Schliemann used dynamite while excavating the ruins of Troy.
