Yeah, I don't believe that many people today have read it.
But it takes us further into the future of the characters.
And thus, we see that udah and Esther got married and helped other Christians during Nero's prosecution.

Really, a part of me wishes that they would have done some epilogue in the 1959 movie too.
Then again, it is long enough as it is.

Oh yeah. It was the filmmakers intent to have them be former lovers, although nobody told Charleston Heston.

You mean, her father?
They had it arranged so that he lived with Judah and Esther after they had gotten married.

There was no stupid 'hook-up' culture in the time in which this movie is set among observant Jewish people. Esther and Judah were engaged or would have been if Judah had not been sent into slavery, and upon his return, been caught up in chariot racing to revenge himself on Messala and later, the search for Tirzah and Miriam.
Although the film ends after the Crucifixion and the healing of Judah's mother and sister, it can be concluded that they married. The book, which few have probably read, makes that clear.
