It was 1959.

I think Ramon is sarcastically commenting on the overly PC, chronically offended atmosphere of our times.

"It was 1959"

It was A.D. 33.

reply

Actually, in 1960 they made "Spartacus", where Woody Strode played an ancient Roman gladiator.

reply

LOL??? Latino? What would that have been? A Mexican?

Plenty of Romans there, though.

Black people of at least two genders partied following the race and seemed to be having a good time.

I love this movie.

Latin was a common language in ancient Rome, so there actually were Latin people.

reply

Did you see the sign they were holding up? "where is the diversity?"

reply

Since when is women a race?

Like a different poster said, there was no such thing as Latinos in the 1rst Century AD.

There could have been a few black charioteers though, but I guess that Hollywood was still a segregated place in 1959.

By the late 1950s, Hollywood was very white-dominated, but was making a few steps towards being inclusive. Films like "Porgy and Bess", "A Raisin in the Sun", and "Imitation of Life" were given big budgets and released for mainstream consumption, and Sidney Poitier was becoming a real star, and black character actors were occasionally able to play something other than servants.

Did you know that the original Ben Hur was played by a Mexican immigrant? Yeah, back in 1925 Hollywood made a big-budget, spectacular, groundbreaking version of the story, and Judah Ben Hur was played by Ramon Navarro, who'd been born and raised in Durango, Mexico.

There were lots of women.
There was a scene of dancing negroes. Is that considered the n word, too?
And they tried to include latinos in chariot races but they didn't yet know they existed.

The Romans did know about the Latinos but didn't want anything to do with them when it came to chariot racing. The Latinos were slamming the chariots and putting hydraulics in them and just plain making a total spectacle of what was considered a serious event.
