i've just finished the movie, and feel tired and exausted,

just an average movie i think, not so good, why the 8.2?

this movie is a classic on many different levels.
-the acting is superb
-the script was 'decades' before it's time using terms such as 'rape' (a riaque subject matter to begin with back in that era), 'panties' (seldom if ever, heard on film), 'sperm', and countless others.

The score is a masterpiece by Duke Ellington (who has a cameo as 'Pie-eye', which is very similar to 'Pie-o-my' if your a Sopranos fan)

This film ranks right up there IMO with DR Strangelove, another masterpiece. By the way, these are more than just films, but rather: art.

There is not a boring character in this movie, from James Stewart on down to Muff, the dog. They are all interesting and keep your attention. I loved the scenes with Stewart and Scott sniping at one another - the judge was excellent, and you really felt bad for Mary Pilant. I love the sound track. But my main reason for loving this movie is the one and only Jimmy Stewart. This truly was probably his best film, next to Mr. Smith.

This movie was excellent and it broke many rules in its day. Those who wonder why this is an excellent movie will probably also wonder why Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn are great literature.

BTW, I think Mannion was guilty as sin and not insane at all.

I think the terms 'sperm', 'climax' and 'intercourse' being introduced in mainstream American movies had a lot to do with the significance of this flick.
Could you imagine the idea of these terms being used in movies of the 1950s? Even the TV show 'Happy Days', which made nostalgia of the 1950s and early 1960s, wasn't so bold.

I think one reason why it was rated so highly is because of getting past censorship. When it was made things like this wasn't discussed openly, i don't belive.

It is a great film, but I still find it funny when she reenacts the rape scene. "He said, 'I'm gonna rape you.'"

The two hours and forty minutes went by like the snap of a finger for me. How many new movies can you say that about?
I found myself wondering what the Manions' relationship was like, what they were really like under the surface, and did we actually hear the truth about what happened that night.

Cultural significance, those two words says it all... -_-

Tho both The Trial and To Kill A Mockingbird are better.

Agree, this is a decent movie, but somewhat overrated in spite of the factor that James Stewart is one of my favorite actors.
