What a lousy soundtrack!

I just saw this at the Williamsburg Film Festival, and whatever its merits as a movie, it was really, really hurt by that ridiculous jazz soundtrack!

This type of film requires eeriness...or brooding portent...not a cheerful, mind-numbing score.

I have to disagree. While the movie is science fiction, it is a much more down-to-earth, realistic story than, say, Forbidden Planet. An eerie synth or theremin soundtrack really *wouldn't* have been appropriate to the story of brother against brother, as one is seduced by the power that's become his, and the necessity of killing others to maintain his life.
So, no, plot was already minimal enough without a livelier soundtrack to give it some punch. The jazzier music does fit more with the theme, in my opinion, and makes it a more interesting sf movie than it would have been otherwise.

Horrible music. Nothing was hip in 1959.

Exactly what I came here to comment on - really ruined a decent film - I hate Jazz anyway because it has ruined many a good film from the 50s and 60s

It's like playing a laugh track at a funeral

Half Irish, Half German - hated by all. But at least I'm not Welsh

Like Louie Armstrong said if I have to explain jazz, you don't get it. I loved soundtrack but real jazz is not for everyone.

Just watched this, while I love 50's bebop > Miles going electric > Return to Forever etc., the score simply doesn't work for me in this. The scene where Scott Scott kills the thieving head of the lab at the window has this jaunty soundtrack that is just wrong. Better to use no music at all at that point.
