Talky Tina, something I never picked up on.

I guess I just kept missing this, but am I the last person on earth to know that Annabelle's new husband couldn't have kids of his own?

I wonder if he's infertile or impotent...

In any case, Erich is a first class tool toward's little Christy and Annabelle. How could anyone not love that sweet little child. She reminds me of my granddaughter.

It's also uncomfortable to realize that a widow (presumably) with a child like Annabelle had few prospects when it came to finding a mate during those times.

reply

I always assumed they used a stepfather because they didn't want people to think a natural father could be so mean.

Agree, but I didn't realize that Erich could not have kids of his own.

They probably also decided to make him infertile so that he would have an insecurity to drive him to be such an ogre, and it's hard to make that the issue with a biological father, since Christy would be living proof that he was not infertile. Granted he could have been rendered impotent from an accident or something, but I don't think TV wanted to go into a topic like that back in the 1960s. Easier all around to make him a stepdad. Though the way he acts would make you wonder what Annabelle saw in him in the first place.

"the way he acts would make you wonder what Annabelle saw in him in the first place."

Definitely. I wonder this every time. He doesn't seem to have even one pleasant moment.

It kind of goes to my original comment that single mature women with a child didn't have a lot of options back then. Seems like she truly settled.

reply

But it sounds like you're justifying her death threats.

Not cool.

Remember, Tina threatens Annabelle at the end as well. So it's not as if she is looking out for everyone's best interests.

I certainly wasn't justifying Tina's killing Erich or threatening Anabelle. I didn't mention Tina at all (other than the title).

My comments were on Erich, Anabelle, and Christy, Erich's sterility (I guess), how Erich was a dick to that darling little girl, and that a divorced/widowed woman with a child like Anabelle was didn't have many options when it came to mates.

reply

Well, Annabelle certainly didn't have to marry a man who was abusive to her daughter. But maybe that's why Tina threatened Annabelle at the end as well.

Something Freudian about this whole thing.

Christy probably killed Erich herself by laying the doll on the stairs.

LOL, maybe!!

strntz- you must be the last! LOL Even I knew Erich couldn't have kids and I'm always the last to pick up on things.

The one thing I noticed after many viewings was the names. Christy is a nickname for Christine. And her doll was Talky Tina. Tina is also a nickname for Christine. I got the impression that the doll was Christie's angry alter ego. She knew that her stepdad was being mean and cruel. She used the doll to get back at him. Like Onan wrote, I really think she put the doll on the stairs to trip Erich and make him fall to his death.

As for Annabelle marrying an abusive man, well we know little to nothing of their background. When I am confused by a character's illogical behavior, I tend to write my own backstory.

Erich could have been widowed or divorced. He wanted children, but he and his wife never had them. He could have assumed that the "problem" was hers. He meets Annabelle who has a daughter. She is eager to have more children when she marries Erich.

Now some time passes and she can't conceive. So clearly the problem lies with Erich. Now he becomes angry and bitter.
I never saw him as hating Christie or even disliking her. He just hated himself. And when you don't like yourself, you don't like anybody. And he took it out on Christy.

I'm not the last to know actually. I found that there's a guy in Sardinia who also didn't know that Erich was sterile, although there of course exists the possibility that the guy in Sardinia doesn't even know what American TV is...

I think Onan was kidding. If Christy placed the doll at the top of the stairs, how did she manage to get the doll to make noises long enough to wake up Erich and then get him to investigate? Tina would ordinarily only become animated for 20 seconds when wound up, yet she was making noises for enough time for Christy to place Tina on the stairs, get back to bed, wake up Erich, have Erich first peek into Christy's room to see that she was sleeping, then make his way to the top of the stairs. Besides, what are the odds he'd even step on the doll? Most importantly, should we believe that little girl would try to kill her stepfather? Seems more likely that Tina positioned herself underfoot. Lastly, after Anabelle discovered Erich dead at the bottom of the stairs, how did Christy get Tina to verbally warn her mother to be good to her and why would Christy even warn her mother to start with? Anabelle was nothing if not a solicitous and loving mom to her.

With regards to not having any more children, I guess it's possible (although a stretch if you ask me) that Erich was married before and blamed his ex for not having kids not realizing it was him, but from what we saw, Erich and Anabelle seemed recently married. Anabelle even said something to the effect that if Erich would give them a chance, she knew that they could both make him happy.

reply

So who is this guy in Sardinia without TV? lol

As far as Tina's movements, well that doll sure got around! This WAS the Twilight Zone after all. It's a creepy story but basically I think it boils down to symbolism. Christy may have been a little child but she was aware on some level that her stepdad's treatment of her was wrong. And her own mother did little to prevent it. When the doll "talked" I think it was the guilty conscience of the adults talking to them.

I still like my theory that Erich had been married before. How ELSE would he assume that he was sterile? Of course he could have been a real player with lots of girlfriends. But he never got the panicked phone call, "Hey buster, I'm LATE!!!" So he might have assumed he was "shooting blanks", as they say.

You'll have to forgive me, I can't recall the exact dialogue as I haven't seen this episode in a long time. They didn't strike me as newlyweds. Perhaps they were married for six months and hoping to get pregnant right away. When they didn't, Erich finally relented and went to the doctor. At that point Annabelle said that "the two of them", meaning she and Christy would make him happy even though they couldn't have more children.
