Can we all just be honest about this movie?

I'm sick of everyone crediting this as a great movie because of the cinematography, the music, and the lighting. Apparently, the people who make these comments are all film producers and camera men. Call me old-fashioned, but I enjoy movies with great scripts, unique stories, and interesting characters. Pardon me for not raving about this movie because the lighting was exquisite. Let's just be honest and identify this film as what it really is: a really boring movie. Orson Welles did some great movies. (The Third Man is one of my all time favorites.) Touch of evil, however, is slow, meandering, and dull.

Rupert - may I call you Rupert? - I agree. This movie sucks. Heston and Dietrich cast as Mexicans? The plot? Are you f'king kidding me?

I watched this movie knowing absolutely nothing, no knowledge of the plot, of anything. Just heard that it was one of the "great" movies of all time. So I put it in the DVD player sat down to watch.

Rupert, you have to admit that opening scene, all in one shot, the tension, was masterful. Sure, the rest of the movie blows great big donkey balls. But you can appreciate the incredible Orson Welles touch, cantcha?

I guess what it comes down to is whether it's worth it to watch an entire movie of drek for a few minutes of brilliance. I thought so.

Taste is relative. Stating an opinion doesn't make it a fact.

I enjoyed the film and have watched it several times.

Never said it was, or that you didn't.

It is excellent after the hour point, but it takes too long to get there.

Not everyone does...it's one of my favorites because of the story and the characters. The elements you mentioned give it great atmosphere.

No, I can't agree with that.

The Third Man is NOT an Orson Welles film. It was directed by Carol Reed.

To me - I either really like a "film noir" or I just find it blah.

Movies like Laura, Double Indemnity & They Drive By Night rank in my top 100

But other critically "great" ones like The Big Sleep, Touch of Evil & The Third Man - I felt were weak and not deserving of high praise.

Cinematography, music and lighting all can make a movie better, but it doesn't save a poor movie outside of making it watchable just for the extra stuff

It's interesting you have Laura in your top 100 and Third Man as a weak film.

I found Laura to merely be "okay," and that The Third Man is one of the best movies Ive ever seen.

That is your opinion, my opinion is it was Hitchcock esque and was very good, yes there is goofs and loop holes if you look for them, but none the less it was a solid effort and much better than the last film I decided to see which was Dances with Wolves, now that is a slow and boring film!

reply

I consider Dances With Wolves a masterpiece. It's too bad Costner shot his credibility with Waterworld.

How can you not like it? That movie is so universally loved that the comic "The Far Side" parodied the idea that anyone wouldn't like it.

Here's the cartoon: http://www.joeclifford.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/danceswolves.jpg

reply

LOL, that Far Side cartoon is great. I liked how Larson had Hell's video store also filled with copies of "Ishtar."
