I must have seen a different movie then you--

I have to admit I could not take my eyes away from the tv yesterday when they played this movie....I kept waiting for it to get somewhere.

I must also confess that I would give it a C at best.

The romancing of Miss French and the immediate head over heels love and subsequent "love lost" was too much to bear.

I thought the acting was comical (i.e. thug from Chicago and Miss French), the storyline sophmoric and the characters unbelievable.

Although these are all valid points that you & others have made, I think yall missed the point that the movie is a satire, ridiculing the hypocritical veneer that covers middle class America.

The whirlwind romace between Dave & schoolteacher was supposed to be ridiculous. As you pointed out, nobody would believe it in a million years. Bingo, that's the point. Minnelli wanted us, the objective audience, to see how foolish Dave's obsession is.

Unbelieveable characters, yes, for reasons above. These are not meant to be real human beings but instead you're supposed to see them as caricatures, satires and stereotypes. The uptight schoolteacher who wears her hair in a bun and won't do the nasty unless the lights are off. The hypocritical father who wants his daughter to be lily white, while he himself goes to lover's lane to makeout like a teenager (brilliant!). The drunk, southern, misogynistic gambler who never takes his hat off. Oh sheesh, yall, please tell me you realize it's all tongue-in-cheek. If you didn't realize that, then I see how you can hate the movie. But I highly recommend watching it again now knowing what the director intended to convey. Other great satires that fit into this category: Catch-22, Starship Troopers, any film by Christopher Guest.

Old fashioned, overlong melodrama reminiscent of Peyton Place, The Naked Kiss and Blue Velvet. The hypocrisy and small mindedness of small town USA with characters and situations that are basically one-note and predictable from the start. Not a masterpiece, but entertaining with some memorable aspects.

Count me in as being disappointed as well. Acting was often very dry and emotionless. Maybe because it followed Gilda? Haha?

OP could not take his eyes away from the tv when he was watching "Some Came Running", but he gives it "a C at best" and says it "was too much to bear". Interesting paradox.
