Although these are all valid points that you & others have made, I think yall missed the point that the movie is a satire, ridiculing the hypocritical veneer that covers middle class America.
The whirlwind romace between Dave & schoolteacher was supposed to be ridiculous. As you pointed out, nobody would believe it in a million years. Bingo, that's the point. Minnelli wanted us, the objective audience, to see how foolish Dave's obsession is.
Unbelieveable characters, yes, for reasons above. These are not meant to be real human beings but instead you're supposed to see them as caricatures, satires and stereotypes. The uptight schoolteacher who wears her hair in a bun and won't do the nasty unless the lights are off. The hypocritical father who wants his daughter to be lily white, while he himself goes to lover's lane to makeout like a teenager (brilliant!). The drunk, southern, misogynistic gambler who never takes his hat off. Oh sheesh, yall, please tell me you realize it's all tongue-in-cheek. If you didn't realize that, then I see how you can hate the movie. But I highly recommend watching it again now knowing what the director intended to convey. Other great satires that fit into this category: Catch-22, Starship Troopers, any film by Christopher Guest.
