You're exactly right: In real-life there was 20 years between the two actors and the age is the same with their characters in the movie. They even make a joke about it in one scene: After noting that she was 20 and he was 40, they agreed that he'd say he was 38, which made it look better.

Men did look so old back then. I just watched the movie last night. It was black and white so that didn't help. But when he mentioned he was 40, I openly laughed. I'm 40 and still look like I'm 30. but anyway, yea, they played it that way in the film. I thought they were stupidly cute together and the '38' joke was adorable.
