Just godawful

Big fan of Vincent Price but I'm sorry this movie is just terrible. Half baked plot and unanswered questions and the film ends quite suddenly where I thought that I must have been given a joke copy to purposely piss you off. One of the few cases where the remake is actually better.

House on Haunted Hill(1959) - 4 outta 10 stars

You're nuts this is one of the best Price films of his time.

reply

2 different movies. And you're judging an old movie by today's standards.

reply

I agree. Price's mere presence makes this film barely watchable. By today's standards its terrible But it seems to have been groundbreaking at the time. Must have been the skeleton flying thru the theater

reply

It wasn't seen as groundbreaking even at the time.

HOHH is a William Castle film, which means by definition it's an unpolished B-movie. But, much like the original 13 GHOSTS of the same era, it's essentially a film made for kids and comes off like a halloween party where not all the gags work, but you're kind of glad you came.

No, it's nowhere near as towering a ghost film as THE HAUNTING (1963) and THE INNOCENTS (1961), and I do wish HOHH was just a wee bit better than it is (much as I wish Castle's STRAIT-JACKET was a wee bit better than it is) but its puerile silliness is part of its charm and that's mostly fine with me.

Yeah it's like no one on this board heard of "camp" before

reply

come on.. the skeleton ending alone makes this 8/10 at least

reply

9/10 at least! Can't beat Vincent Price, black-and-white, that skeleton, and a good William Castle gimmick.

reply

One of my favourite Halloween watches. 8/10

reply

It's a classic and good for its time

reply

I was disappointed.
