With Witness for the Prosecution, 12 Angry Men, Paths of Glory, The Seventh Seal, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Wild Strawberries, A Face in the Crowd, and Sweet Smell of Success, is 1957 the best year for film ever? I believe it's up there.
A person could pick 1927, 1928 or any year between 1939 and 1943. That same person could just as easily go with 1950, 1968 or 1980. I feel good arguments could be made for any of these years.
What's so great about 1939? I mean, other than Gone with the Wind. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Stagecoach, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Wuthering Heights, Ninotchka, Of Mice and Men, The Wizard of Oz, The Women, Gunga Din, Dark Victory, Daybreak, The Four Feathers, ....
There's something different about you today, Mr. Laurio.
also "Love Affair", "The Rules of the Game", "Destry Rides Again", "Drums Along the Mohawk", "Intermezzo: A Love Story", "Juarez", "Gunga Din", "The Little Princess", "Jesse James", "The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex", "The Roaring Twenties", and "You Can't Cheat an Honest Man".
1962 - I've always said this: 'To Kill a Mockingbird', 'Birdman of Alcatraz', 'Lawrence of Arabia', 'The Miracle Worker', 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane', 'Le Mepris'......I wasn't born until 1973, but '62 always seemed endless of great movies....But, yes, '39 would come a close 2nd.
With a few exceptions I find it hard to watch pre WW2 films, the silence between scenes with all that crackling. Also the acting of that era was kind of corny for my liking. 1967 was a good year with the likes of Cool hand Luke, the graduate, In cold blood , amongs many others. To each their own.
1939 - La Regle De Jeue, Gone with the Wind, Of Mice and Men, The Roaring Twenties, The 39 Steps, Goodbye Mister Chips, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Stagecoach, The Wizard Of Oz
Great year but don't know about the best of all time.
