This film and Early Summer are my favorite Ozu films. I don't understand why it does not have a better reputation. The rhythm fitted the story perfectly and the cinematography was breathtaking. This was pure poetry and cinema heaven IMHO.

I agree, this is one of Ozu's bests. Artistically speaking the mood is incredible and it's really sad. After watching it I still can't go over Akiko's death.
It just might be the best Ozu movie i've seen. And i've seen a lot of them. I love almost all his movies, but this one just might be my favorite. I suppose my only criticism of Ozu would be that he gave all his movies very similar titles and it's hard for me to pick out in my memory which one was which. They're all great though.

I think Early Spring is the most underrated one I've seen so far. In fact, Tokyo Story, while still great, has been my least favorite. Ozu was a master.
