Burt Lancaster's character was based on Walter Winchell, one of the most powerful columnista in the business. Don't doubt for a moment that he had a huge amount of clout and power. The problems with his daughter (not his sister) and her boyfriend were the beginning of the decline of Winchell's powerbase.
