The least deserving of all Best Picture Winners?

I find this film to be one of the weakest of it's year. I think it's a shame that something so elegant as THE TEN COMMANDMENTS didn't recieve the award for Best Picture that year... or even THE KING AND I... but this? While I do own this movie, I still think that it's very much TOO long and drawn out... and relied heavily on it's "exotic" locations and unique cinematography (for the time). Your thoughts on who should have really won the Best Picture Oscar for that year?

"Crash" is about as low as the Academy ever got in my book. A movie of the week masquerading as a think piece. Just awful.

No, it definitely deserved best picture against the other nominees.
The Ten Commandments was too long and drawn out. The King and I relied heavily on its "exotic" setting.
You would have had a better case with Giant.

I'd have to suggest 'Around the World' is possibly the least deserving of all best musical score winners though.

If you weren't around at the time, it's difficult to imagine what a popular phenomenon this film was. Everyone saw it and loved it, from ages 6 to 90. Sophisticates loved the Brit humor, kids loved Cantinflas, and everyone loved the scenery and the cameos.

Bonnie and Clyde should have won instead of In the Heat of the Night. A Face in the Crowd should have at least been nominated in '58.

Agree that 'Bonnie and Clyde' should-have-won over 'In the Heat of the Night'.

Have seen all of the A/Winners from 'Wings' onwards and an awful lot of the nominees, plus other films which should have been nominated.

Hate to sound negative, but from 1950 until 2015 I am dead set convinced that only 19 out of 66 of the winning films deserved the grand prize. It just goes to show how individual taste or personal judgement can vary.

Failure to nominate 'The Searchers' was awful. Certainly a better film than '80 days', which is on my top ten list of most despised Academy Award winners since 1950.

It does, and I have to shake my head at the above commenters lack of taste. LOL

I adore Around the World in Eighty Days, it is by no means the worst best picture winner... I've seen alot worse

reply

the consensus amongst critics is the The Greatest Show on Earth was the least deserving Oscar winner and I would agree IMO worse the Around the World

reply

the topic here is spot on i find according to my own experience of this, in the beginning was explanation that reminded of "back to the future 3", but also right off there is hint of the movie getting overlong, it moved so unnecessarily slow, and sure enough it continued for 3 hours, the remake runs for two hours, usually it's the other way around, old movies have a reasonable running time and new movies could be added up to a mini series. anyway i watched this version, and i thought it was like those sort of movies where they just throw in a bunch of major stars in a movie and put them in goofy surroundings, notice how it can be very far between any dialogue at all, on the contrary to the audio version i heard though, divided up on 6 cd's at least, speaking for hours twice the running time of this, the story on the audio version about the murderous gang in india a few centuries back, a true story i read about in a history book, that seems a bit dark to be featured in the light movie versions, there also is some wording i figure is definitely not featured in the 21st century movie.

I suppose it had the advantage of a lot of the voters being in it!
