James Dean Icon?

i recently watched 'rebel without a Cause' and to be honest felt like it was a huge fuss over nothing i don't see how he became an icon after this someone please tell me why he bacame an icon? what makes him so appealing? and why has his legacy lasted so long?

reply

I'm not an American and I don't understand this ICON thing but the whole 'fuss' over James Dean has 50% to do with his tragic death at the age of 24 and the other half is that people 'smelt' and 'saw' Marlon Brando in James Dean. (Both of they were 'discoveries' of Elia Kazan, right?)
I think he was a good actor, I must add.

reply

It was hugely due to his death that he became an icon. Death really elevates your legend.
Kurt Cobain would be no more bigger than Axl Rose if he didn't die.
Likewise with John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
Marilyn Monroe would probably have been seen as the poor man's Elizabeth Taylor had she not died.

reply

you're completely wrong and possibly retarded, and by the way mccartney is still alive

reply

For the same reasons as most other icons - charisma and looks.

reply

He's an icon because he died young. Dean was an okay, yet very hammy actor. You could have a drinking game for every time he wraps his arms around himself and falls on the floor crying. He probably would have improved with years more experience. If he had quit Hollywood after his three movies instead of getting killed, he would probably be completely forgotten today.
