Why Best Picture?

I like this film. I like it a lot. The directing was fine, and the writing was good. And Ernest Borgnine's portrayal was very touching. But should "Marty" have won Oscars? It didn't seem like Paddy Chayefsky's best work, and the acting, especially Betsy Blair's, was either stiff or stagey. I honestly think "Mr. Roberts" should have won for best picture.

Guess it was this "heartwarming", "uplifting" story about regular folk and stuff. And as such, it's actually pretty keenly observed, not too screwed up on unrealistic sugar rush (that said, it didn't really have any of the biting edge Chayefsky's future works like Network or The Hospital displayed). Far as I'm concerned, it don't make the top 10 of 1955 though.

I don't agree with your criticism of Betsy Blair's acting in this film. Clara was a very shy person, and that comes across well.
