Is Marty a virgin?

He coudn't have lost his virginity while serving in either WWII or the Korean War because there was no allusion to him having served in the Armed Forces.

He seems to much of a self-conscious gentleman to have purchased a woman's embrace. Plus his Catholicism would have condemmned visiting a hooker.

So, if you look at the film in the light that he is a virgin, it makes much more poignant sense.
Up until the point of meeting the teacher, he had been married to his mother.

Maybe, maybe not. His friend Angie's allusions to them previously "going down to 72nd St" implies they had purchased female companionship on more than one occasion.

And I don't understand what you mean about his military service. He served in the Army for several years, as I understood it, getting out when he was 25.

Great insight into the background of Marty. I have enjoyed
this film over the many years that I have seen it, because it is soooooo
true for so many people. You can totally feel his pain!

You stated, "there was no allusion to him having served in the Armed Forces."

There was a bit of a mention of his service in the coffee shop scene, where he describes an event on the rifle range where the person in the next lane erroneously shot Marty's target. He says, "That's how I became known as the best shot in the battalion."

I don't remember any specific timing of his service mentioned, but as a 34-year old in 1955 (born in 1921 or so), he would have been around 20 at the time of Pearl Harbor. He could have served in WWII or in Korea, or both.

He ran that stockade in Hawaii, survived from knife wounds, headed back to NYC.

I watched this wonderful movie today for probably the 50th time--I just love "Marty." Anyhow, I don't think he was a virgin. There are a few subtle hints that he and Angie may have scored a few bad girls here and there before Marty met Clara. Marty's a nice guy, but the man has needs!

Well, he WAS in the Army, probably during WWII, and if he were overseas, all that was needed to obtain feminine companionship, was a supply of nylons and chocolate bars.

Why would a pair of pantyhose give him an advantage to scoring with asian women back in WWII? I get the oranges thing as I remember that reference on Seinfeld that asian people consider oranges rare.

Not pantyhose, nylons. Nylon stockings came up to mid-thigh length and were held in place by garter belts. Pantyhose weren't invented until after the miniskirt exploded across the fashion world in the Sixties. You couldn't wear a garter belt with a miniskirt because the garters would have been visible.
