They tried too hard to make the character despicable. What he did with the mules and the wagons was bad enough. No one would have followed his orders if he was truly that sadistic-Son O Boss, or not.

I watched by accident this film and found it very tedious. I watched for maybe twenty minutes and gave up. Nothing was happening- the editing seemed static. I did not last for the hand shooting scene but my guess is that Mann, the director felt he needed to wake up the audience. A very very boring film.

The story was originally printed in the old "Saturday Evening Post" magazine. The hand shooting sequence was in the story. I read it as a teenager and the movie follows the story very closely.

Yeah just watched this. When they held out Lockheart's hand, the guy holding him is right behind his hand when he shoots him, presumably the goon also got shot in the belly. Couldn't stop laughing at this.

So I guess you wouldn't approve of scenes in historical epic films like The Vikings (1958) and Taras Bulba (1962) or a children's book like Otto of the Silver Hand.
