Most hysterical moment....

Professor Leslie Joyce tells Commander Mathews, "You underestimate my ability to help in a crisis." Then seconds later the monster appears and the first thing out of her mouth is a blood curdling scream.

Good grief.

if you mean even like creepy moment sure when the cargo ship's sailors see the huge tentacles emerging from the deep. I watched for the first time the movie in 1955 I was 7 year old i always remembered these shots.

I, too, first saw this movie when I was seven years old in 1955. I was at the drive-in with my teen-aged cousins. (What fun, fun memories). A few years later, when my family moved to SF Bay Area, all I could think of when I first saw the GG Bridge was this movie.

I'm watching this film again right now, and it still has a very soft spot in my heart.

The monster wrecks the Golden Gate Bridge, downs a helicopter, wrecks some vehicles and building, so now everyone wants to abandon San Francisco and go to...Oakland?

Really why do you need to run away from our beloved ock. If you were more then a few blocks inland?

Yup, that caught my attention. Yet, I was laughing at the dialogue between Matthews, Joyce, and Carter in their environmental suits. You can't see their faces, and it's unclear exactly who these people are (even with the narration). They're all looking down; just three yabbering homo sapiens in space suits. At that point I realized that this was going to be really, really bad.

That is the exact thing that I came to post about, she and the other professor gang up on the airman guy with this long lecture about women's capabilities in the 20th century and how it's a changing world but some women are a fearsome breed. Moments later she's stooped in a car terrified while her male companions race to rescue someone.

Way to do equality, 1955! You played a blinder.

Right after she and her colleague had just given the sub commander a lecture about what a strong modern woman she was, she goes hysterical and starts screeching. She flips out again later when she sees the creature by the bridge. Yeah, I had to laugh.
