Amazing...

That there are scores of young and middle-aged men in Dodge City who have nothing to do all day and night but loiter, drink, gamble, whore, and gather in the street to cheer on fist fights.

And that one lawman can maintain reasonable control over all of these intoxicated, armed, belligerent louts who spend their time in raucous debauchery and troublemaking.

I love "Gunsmoke".

These are all cowboys who spend months on end driving cattle. They come to town to party their paychecks away till it's time to head back out to work again. It's still exactly like this in work camp towns. You have a revolving door of young, horny riled up men with too much money and not enough sense.

To a large extent, you're right. There are a lot of cowboys hanging around Dodge--young, horny, armed, drunk, with nothing to do but blow their money and get in trouble. But there also seem to be quite a few local citizens in the bars and streets all the time who have no jobs or anything important to do. Loiterers and loafers. Thank God the town had a man like Matt Dillon to keep law and order!
