How many cowboys did we hear say "that's the most beautiful woman I have ever seen", and you have to think either he's drunk or he must not have seen very many woman. Kittys not one bit attractive.
But putting more perspective to the situation, you have to recognize that Miss Kitty was, for that era, in a far Western frontier town. So for this comparatively remote location, there were not many attractive women around, period.
And being at her bar, she was also one of the few single women readily accessible for men to see and to associate with. Perhaps cowboys or range riders who might not have seen a woman for weeks, or even months. So easy to understand why she would garner so much attention and admiration.
And while I state she is overrated and not very attractive (to me), she did have a curvy female figure which could easily attract these horny cowboys.
The style they gave her later on has a lot more of that "fancy lady" thing too. I guess they wanted her to look like a more convincing madame or to give her a bit more authority. She was more natural looking in the really old ones. The old Kitty always reminded me of Audrey Meadows from the Honeymooners.
You're right about that. But give her credit, it's refreshing to see some regular looking people on TV. Not every woman in show biz needs to be a beauty queen.
Oddly enough, when I was little, pre-school, I liked Endora, with the red hair, suddenly appearing on the stair rail or something. I honestly thought she was pretty.
When I got older, I did learn the tricks for detecting her real age and began to notice she was older than I had realized. I liked her behavior, the way she would taunt Darrin.
As for Kitty, being what was supposed to be a likable character, I found her overly hard, and as has been noted, she looked rougher after '65, which was by and large when I watched the show.
But if they tried to fight her aging, which obviously they did, that's what made it worse. Always does.
If her voice hadn't hardened like it did, that alone may have made her more appealing.
It would take seeing her in something else out of the bar matron dress (which looks like so much lace and barbed wire), and after Gunsmoke, I think she essentially retired, but she did appear on a Love Boat episode and tho then another decade older, she was working with someone other than Arness, and she had a grown daughter on the show, so she may have appeared loosened up. I haven't seen the episode in a while tho.
Damn straight she was hot when the show first started and there were hints of naughtiness her saloon was also a brothel if you didn't pick up on that. That was just the way it was.😏
But there is an episode in which Kitty explains to Matt that she teaches her "girls" good manners, etc. "None of them has ever left me worse-off than when she came." Of course, if she was already "loose"...
It's obvious from the early episodes that the Long Branch is a house of ill repute. The cowhands aren't walking up the stairs simply to get a better view of the saloon. (The real Long Branch did not have prostitutes.)
