to the 971 people who gave this 1 star...
I'm not trying to attack any of you, but I just want to know the reason that you didn't like this movie. Was it because it's an old movie, or that you weren't a fan of the plot, or something else?

shareI think many people who vote on this site don't have the ability to understand what a 1 star rating means; they confuse "the lowest of the low in films" with "this movie bored me". I rarely give movies a 1 vote, even if they're bad (I usually go for 2 or 3 if they have at least one redeeming quality). An example of a movie I gave a 1 rating is Scary Movie (one of them, at least). So, if I were to compare it with On the Waterfront... um, ok... there's no comparison, really. It's like saying On the Waterfront has a bad script, bad direction, all the actors have extremely poor performances, the art direction is crap, the music is crap, etc. This is what you take into account when reviewing a movie.
There's also the possibility of trolls voting it 1 to make it slip lower in the Top 250, but I doubt it, since it's not that high.
Normal is not something to aspire to, it's something to get away from.
First off, this thread is about 2% of the respondents to this poll. The consequent discussion has been a pretty strange assortment of mistaken notions.
Yet there is one general idea that caught my attention and that was about the political nature of this film, when it was made, why was made, and what the characters stood for. Every bit of that is irrelevant.
A creative work must stand on its own. It will not suffer descriptions, critiques, or any substantiation to communicate its message. When you hear authors describe their stories and photographers described their images they have betrayed their craft. The message must come from the work itself.
It is inviting to try and understand a piece of work in the context of the world that comes from, it's times, but that is only gossip and the self-aggrandizement of discussion. Even this site serves that same function in that it creates buzz and interest and ultimately affects market share. That has nothing to do with the expression of the creative work. That is just a marketing bonus.
In cinema all you have is what you see on the screen and it either works or it doesn't. The lights go down, the projector rolls and the lamp is lit; the screen comes alive. Nothing else matters.
No one could dislike the flawless plot.
It's because it is an old movie.
And because they don't 'get' Marlon Brando.
Raise your glasses, please, into a toast, for we are many hometown ghosts.
^^they probably think Christian Bale in The Dark Knight is better than Marlon Brando in this.

I wish we still made films in black and white.
I'm 23 years old and female and On the Waterfront has been one of my favorite films since I was young. This was the first dramatic film I ever saw that had affected me so powerfully. I still get chills and teary eyed when watching the film now and quote it whenever I can. I live for classic films and I don't know what I'd do without them. Now, I don't want to point fingers like a five year old and try to figure out who gave this film one star, but I'm sorry that there are those who do not understand the brilliance of films such as these. I wish they could find as much happiness and meaning as I do in old films.
And I'd pick to watch On the Waterfront over Titanic and The Notebook any day.
You're still young.

They're Communists, clearly. They probably secretly like the movie but they're under orders to vote it down.
I gave it a 6/10 because I'm half-communist.

Those who try to make distinctions between education & entertainment know little of either.
971 people who know *beep* about great films!!
Generation nothingness personified!
I gave this 1 star. But did it ten times. Does that add up????
Just watching this belatedly for the first time. I had stayed away due to BRANDO. While he's very good in this film, it's the ENSEMBLE, DIRECTING, CINEMATOGRAPHY, STORY, and reflection of the real life situations that make this one of the best of all time. I never thought I'd like it this much, but what a film.
Kazan stands out as one of the best directors of the 20th and maybe of all. He made movies with a bit of a bite to them. More than one...
Oh, and it's a NYC story too. The city's a star in this as well. Kinda like MANHATTAN but a different type of story. Tales of the city. WEST SIDE STORY is another.
People giving pretty much any movie a 1 is just lowering the overall rating. They just don't believe On The Waterfront for example deserves it's 8.3 rating.
But I doubt they actually believe the rating of this movie or any other movie in the top 250 really deserves a 1. There are exceptions of course and that's just a matter of personal taste.

They did it for one reason, to bump it down so as to raise their favorite movie up in rank, probably 960 out of the 971 have never watched OTW.
Btw, I gave OTW 9 stars, and would probably only give their fav movies 1 or 2 stars (legitimately too), the recent high rated movies like Inception or The Dark Knight are nothing more than junk.
its ridiculous. certain movies like On The Waterfront should have a separate rating scale starting from 7.
