My favourite actor of all time is Marlon Brando which is evident in my selection. Also, although Hopkins only appears for 16 minutes in Silence Of The Lambs, those 16 minutes are pure gold.
Anthony Perkins- Psycho Marlon Brando- A Streetcar Named Desire Marlon Brando- On the Waterfront Tom Hanks- Forrest Gump Anthony Hopkins- The Silence of the Lambs Jack Nicholson- One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Robert De Niro- Taxi Driver Heath Ledger- The Dark Knight Jimmy Stewart- It's a Wonderful Life Lee J. My all-time favorite male performance is without a doubt Jack Nicholson in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" - the most charismatic display of masculinity I've ever seen and what put him ahead of all others was all that easy charm and the humor. The scene where he revenges Billy's suicide is maybe the most gut-wrenching of all movie scenes for me. I have to go in another room to cool off before I can be around people. I couldn't love this man more if I wanted to.
#2 - Jon Voight - "Midnight Cowboy". A sweet, very touching and believable portrayal, much preferred him to Dustin Hoffman in this.
#3 - Richard Burton - "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf". Excellent performance, subtle, imaginative and extremely insightful, and I think soooo much better than Elizabeth Taylor, who won (an undeserved, IMO) Oscar.
#4 - Marlon Brando - "A Streetcar Named Desire" (thought he was over-rated and a little boring in OTW)
#5 - Gerard Depardieu - "Going Places"
#6 - Al Pacino - "Dog Day Afternoon"
#7 - Rutger Hauer - "Turkish Delight"
#8 - Dustin Hoffman - "Tootsie"
#9 - Michael Caine - "X, Y and Zee" (one of my favorite actors, had to pick my fave. Also, Liz Taylor's best performance!)
#10 - Christopher Walken - "The Deer Hunter"
#11 - Robert Mitchum - "The Night of the Hunter"
#12 - Robert DeNiro - "Mean Streets" - absolutely electrifying!
Marlon Brando - Well it is either for 'On the Waterfront' or 'A Streetcar Named Desire'. Both great stuff.
Michael Caine - 'Educating Rita'. Probably his best performance, although 'The Quiet American' comes close.
Anthony Hopkins - 'The Remains of the Day'. He should have won an Oscar for that, over Hanks for 'Philadelphia'.
Robert De Niro - I would go for 'Taxi Driver'. De Niro as the damaged man(almost an alien) in New York is amazing.
Al Pacino - I think his best performance is 'The Godfather Part II'. Turning Michael Corelone into a pure evil man was what held the central focus of that film.
Daniel Day-Lewis - My Left Foot. An amazing performance. I don't think he has ever topped it.
Spencer Tracy - Bad Day at Black Rock. Beautifully understated performance by him.
James Stewart - It's a Wonderful Life. Going from a placid man to a very angry and suicidal one, is a tour-de-force for him.
Gerald Depardieu - Cyrano de Bergerac. The definitive version.
Laurence Olivier - Richard the III. As the snarling, hunchbacked tyrannical king. Speaking to the camera as it was a stage audience. A mesmerising performance.
Alec Guinness - Kind Hearts and Coronets. His multiple roles in this are what makes it stand out.
Cary Grant - Bringing Up Baby. A comedy performance and probably a hard one to pull off. Playing a geeky clutzy guy was tricky for him.
Humphrey Bogart - Casablanca. Playing a down on his luck character.
Orson Welles - Citizen Kane. Who else could play Kane?
Jack Nicholson - Chinatown. A beautifully understated performance. Plus, getting to do half the film with his nose bandaged up. Not doing his 'wild Jack' usual stuff.
Robert Duvall - Tender Mercies. Does his own singing and pulls off an amazing performance.
Gene Hackman - The Conversation. A beautifully underplayed performance from him. A tragic man is Harry Caul.
Jack Lemmon - Save the Tiger. Jack going into breakdown mode as a businessman in trouble is great.
Gary Oldman - Sid and Nancy. A superb transformation for him.
Bob Hoskins - Mona Lisa. As a down on his luck ex-con, Hoskins is superb as the unlikely hero.
William Holden - He is great in Sunset Boulevard.
Sean Connery - The Untouchables. You should also check out his stuff with Sidney Lumet. That is great as well.
Gary Cooper - Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
Dustin Hoffman - Perhaps for Kramer versus Kramer. Acting with a child might have been difficult to do.
Roy Scheider - All That Jazz. A musical performance, as well as satirizing the director of the film.
Henry Fonda - The Lady Eve. A superb comedic role for him.
Kevin Spacey - LA Confidential. As the smart alec cop, he perhaps stands out amongst the cast of the film.
Peter O'Toole - Laurence of Arabia. Beautiful performance from him. With his lovely velvety voice.
James Cagney - Angels With Dirty Faces. Probably his best gangster role.
Gary Cooper - Meet John Doe, A Farewell To Arms, High Noon, Pride of the Yankees, Beau Geste, Mr Deeds Goes To Town. (my favorite actor of all time, so I could list all of his movies, here) Don Cheadle - Hotel Rwanda, Talk To Me Sidney Poitier - In The Heat Of The Night, Raisin In The Sun Lon Chaney - HE Who Gets Slapped, Tell It To The Marines, The Ace Of Hearts, et al Richard Barthelmess - Heroes For Sale, Tol'lable David, The Patent Leather Kid, The Enchanted Cottage John Gilbert - Flesh & The Devil, The Big Parade, Downstairs John Barrymore - Dinner At Eight, Don Juan, Arsene Lupin, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Svengali Fredric March - A Star Is Born, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, The Best Years Of Our Lives, Inherit The Wind Spencer Tracy - Captains Courageous, A Guy Named Joe, Inherit The Wind, Bad Day At Black Rock Walter Huston - Dodsworth, American Madness, The Furies, Abraham Lincoln Ronald Colman - The Light That Failed, Random Harvest, Stella Dallas, Beau Geste, Lost Horizon James Stewart - Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, Harvey Henry Fonda - Grapes of Wrath, You Only Live Once, The Ox-Bow Incident, Mister Roberts, 12 Angry Men Robert Montgomery - Here Comes Mr Jordan, Night Must Fall Robert Taylor - Magnificent Obsession, Camille James Cagney - The Public Enemy, Yankee Doodle Dandy, White Heat Paul Muni - Scarface, I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang, The Story Of Louis Pasteur, The Good Earth, The Life of Emile Zola, Angel On My Shoulder Robert Deniro - Raging Bull Al Pacino - Serpico Toshiro Mifune - Seven Samurai Tony Leung Chiu Wai - Ashes Of Time, Hard Boiled, Infernal Affairs, In The Mood For Love, 2046 Andy Lau - Shaolin, Infernal Affairs, The Warlords Cary Grant - Father Goose, None But the Lonely Heart, The Philadelphia Story, Penny Serenade, Suspicion Charles Boyer - Love Affair, Algiers, L'homme du large, Hold Back The Dawn John Boles - Back Street, The Love of Sunya Freddy Bartholomew - Captains Courageous, Little Lord Fauntleroy Dana Andrews - Laura, The Best Years Of Our Lives Edward G Robinson - Little Caesar, Double Indemnity, Key Largo Robert Mitchum - Cape Fear, The Night of The Hunter Gregory Peck - To Kill A Mockingbird, Duel In the Sun Clark Gable - Gone With The Wind, It Happened One Night, Mutiny on The Bounty Franchot Tone - Mutiny on the Bounty Charles Laughton - Mutiny On the Bounty, The Canterville Ghost, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Big Clock, Sign of the Cross Ramon Novarro - Ben-Hur: A Tale Of The Christ, Scaramouche George Sanders - The Picture of Dorian Gray, Rebecca, The Saint Chiwetal Ejiofor - Kinky Boots, Dirty Pretty Things, (edited to add) 12 Years a Slave
I cannot believe more people have not mentioned Ralph Fiennes for Schindler's List. When you account for the fact that the movie is very long, he essentially puts in a lead performance and the conflictedness of his character is just phenominal.I think Burt Lancaster for Elmer Gantry was also a fabulous performance that has been overlooked. Same with Cary Grant for Notorious - he was also great in Suspicion, an overlooked film. Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot has only been mentioned 4 or 5 times and he is fabulous as well. I think Brando was best in a Streetcar Named Desire.
