Don't forget people, this was 1950s America...

Everything then was about God and country. Conform, obey, anything else is bad and dangerous. All these flicks were heavily overseen by government censors. Even a power that could dare question, and defeat, America would still suffer the wrath of God for doing so, because if God is for us who could be against us. At least that's the parochial thinking of the time. And even Hollywood had to kowtow to that. So, whilst it may be offensive to us educated and modern people just take it with a massive grain of salt as it were.

Even though we have a long way to go, look how far we've come from the tyranny of religion in just a few short decades. A couple of centuries from now and the evil superstition of religion may be purged from our race entirely - if we survive. Then again, over half the people you meet are of below average intelligence, and so long as there are stupid and weak people, we'll have religion.

You certainly sound enlightened......This was a great film with or without the religious overtones...BTW im an atheist, so no god in my life, but it does not bother me at all.....

I tend to agree with Gallileo60 on this one. Yes there is parochialism, but it's time-related...the notion that today is the most enlightened we've ever been or ever will be. Today we have intrusive regulations, oppressive speech codes and apologies galore. Religion is smaller now, but government is a lot bigger.

BTW, the pastor got pasteurized by the Martians and the 23rd Psalm didn't help.

I assume you mean half the people you meet are below mean intelligence. Got news for you; half the population will always be below mean intelligence.

You display the typical arrogance of much of the intelligentsia; proclaiming yourself superior to the hoi polloi, but often severely lacking in common sense or basic skills.

Worth noting too is that Americans are a lot dumber now than they were in the 50s. Math and science scores continue to plummet when compared with other developed nations. Anot her recent study shows that attention span is also decreasing. Americans' average attention span is now 8 seconds - one second more than goldfish.
The shared values which once held the nation together have frayed, and my hunch is that our great grandchildren will be subservient to the Chinese.

A$$holes like you are infected with the desire to apply current socioeconomic values to days long since gone, and then spout drivel about how "backwards" they were.

All that accomplishes is that you show your true colors....a self-important and condescending sh!theel who finds the need to belittle other who don't conform to your agenda - typical of today's "progressive" mentality.

As an agnostic, I really don't have a dog in this fight, but I am truly tired of the selfishness displayed by your ilk - the vast majority of vile commentary seems to come from your side of the aisle. In keeping with the spirit of your post, "have a miserable life, and an early death".

Spare me your Christaphobic remarks. It's fine to question things and find answers but I can tell you that if more people lived their lives as Christ did, the world would be much better off.

As another commenter said, we have our own troubles in the world we live in now. You might remember Dickens writing "it was the best of times and the worst of times" much like today.

People like the OP are the reason America is the way it is now. People have no values or respect. The 1950s were a great time in America.
