Surprised that a film made in 1953 with an illustrious cast…


was shot in black and white. The Wizard of Oz came out in 1939 and Laurence Olivier even managed to shoot Henry V in color almost a decade earlier in Britain while WWII was ongoing. Would the decision to make the film in B&W likely have been an artistic choice or budgetary consideration?

They were still making black&white movies regularly up through the mid-1960s.

Couldn't say. If I had to guess, it would be keeping in the visual style of the movies that it is trying to be a spoof. Like The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, Key Largo all those movies Bogart did in the forties.
