Get the word out on all your other posts on other forums. This film needs to keep moving up, horrified that it wasn't even on the top 250 til a few weeks ago.

shareI completely agree with you about being in the top 250. Unfortunately most of the people that rate movies here are under 35 and prefer the CGI, action based, fast paced movies rather than a character driven one with great dialoque. These days romantic comedies need plenty of nudity and crass remarks to be considered funny...certainly not very romantic. The English still manage to put out some good ones from time to time, usually period ones when romance flourished.
This movie goes back to a time when life was simpler and people fell in love without the benefit of internet dating and one night stands. I was born back then and loved growing up in those years. Movies were simpler too and movie stars were to be looked up to and savored, unlike the ones we have now who end up in jail half the time or wear practically nothing on their bodies except maybe some tattoos.
Audrey Hepburn was my favorite person then and still is. She radiated elegance, charm and a natural beauty that is still trying to be immitated to this day but with no one achieving it. She was a mother first and an actress second, cutting short her career to conceive and raise her children. She devoted the last part of her life to humanitarian work which she threw her heart into. It was sad to see her life end at such an early age due to cancer. I can only imagine how many awards she might have won if she made more movies.
For a dramatic role, catch her in Wait Until Dark..a real suspense thriller that she did a marvalous job with playing a blind woman who is terrorized. How to Steak a Million was a cute crime caper, not of the caliber of Charade, but fun nonetheless and gorgeous clothes. Angelina seems to be trying to imitate her but never will, there is only one Audrey and one Roman Holiday. I just hope no one ever tries to remake it.
Tbqh there isnt much after the 80s and 90s there isnt much if anything thats worth being in the top 250. And pretty much zilch in the 21st century. Its quite sad really.
But then again, who takes IMDB lists seriously! :lol:

And I completely agree with your assessment of IMDb's raters. Any rating system will have its biases, so I usually look at the "User Review" comments & ratings on IMDb, as well as those by Roger Ebert, and on "Rotten Tomatoes" to get more of a balanced perspective.
I just watched the film and really enjoyed it. Great story, acting, cinematography. A very welcome film in the top 250. I'm surprised it hasn't been in the top list until now.

I disagree. I enjoyed it (7/10), but it's by no means a top 250 film.
That said, it does shine against most 1953 films I've seen (e.g. The Wild One, The War of the Worlds) (5/10).
The two other good films I've found from 1953 so far are Tokyo Story (9/10) and From Here to Eternity (7/10), neither of which are in the IMDb top 250, but should be if this film is.
7/10 is acceptable, even though this film is officially one of my top 20 of all time. I think for many of us hardcore fans (those who believe it belongs in the top 250), it's a combination of aspects from beginning to end which endear us tremendously to the film. I can see how some of those aspects may not mean as much to others. Then there's an ending which is considered to be an unhappy one by some people, which is understandable as well.

I was just going over the top 250 list again. I'm surprised that such a large percentage of my favorites are on there. Someone might accuse me of only liking what other people like, but I really decided them all on my own. lol

And yes 7/10 isnt a bad score if someone doesnt like it as much. Anything less then a 7 would be pretty low in my eyes.
No problemo, I should've quoted him/her. MY bad :). 7/10 used to offend me, actually, for films I really liked, but I've come to terms with how it averages out and that 7/10 isn't so bad after all.
shareThis movie is always on the edge of the Top 250. I saw this movie 4 years ago for the first time and then it was already in the Top 250. In my opinion it deserves to be in this list. You can wake me in the middle of the night to watch this movie. But everybody has a different opion. In fact, I really hated the Shawshank Redemption and that movie is number 1 in the list.

It's up to 209 . It's funny how right before this thread was started I couldn't understand why it wasn't in the top 250. Now it's been there for over two years and keeps climbing.

Absolutely. This is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. It really makes me smile. Makes me want to believe in, and fall in love all over again.

Well said. I just noticed Roman Holiday has slipped back to #229. It seems like they used to show it on TV a lot more often, which I think raised its number.
I was blindsided by how great this movie was. It is simply not in the conversation for the top 5 or 10 classic American romantic comedies, and it should be.

Well said. I was blindsided, as well, because I never thought I'd like a Gregory Peck film. Roman Holiday made me realize he's more dynamic than I thought.
Many people, including me, believe Roman Holiday is a remake of Princess O'Rourke (1943) which will be on TCM July 13th at 10pm - Eastern. In my opinion the original has fun moments and is worth watching, but the remake is superior.
The AFI named it as one of the top 5 screen romances of all time.
